Greetings: The Rocklin Shops are pleased to announce that GP9 5681 & 5674 have been repaired and are ready for road service once again after sitting on the dead track for almost two years.
Here is the link to the photos: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/S-Scale/photos/album/310495098/pic/list?mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=21&count=20&dir=asc>. In case it does not work, I have posted pictures in my "John Gibson Photos" album on this site. As some may recall, at the excellent recommendation of Sam McCoy, I swapped out the original AM motors for AM 395 flat motors which have much better torque and respond well to DCC. However, AM does not make the correct size universals to fit this motor's shaft (they are 2.3 mm shaft) so I used a combination of NWSL and A-Line universal parts which were not correct size but seemed to fit well. Unfortunately, the units stalled out on a grade on their test run on Ed Loizeaux's layout pulling a sizable reefer train (maybe 40 plus cars?). The culprit was the universals slipping on the motor shaft. After chatting about the problem with Sam McCoy at the 2009 O + S Scale West convention (chatting about this stuff is an excellent reason to go to conventions BTW), he told me that S-Helper had the correct universals for this motor. Since time is a premium at the shops, it took me over three months to complete the work you know the drill, 5 minutes one night, 20 minutes another, zero minutes the next because my wife found me hiding in the shop instead of cleaning guts and so forth. <VBG>. However, I pressed on and was able to complete the work this weekend. The photos show the universals and motor in place on 5674. I have also attached a photo of the complete installation Kapton tape is my friend! <VBG> Also, I have included two pictures of the complete units. The plan is for these engines to run on Ed L's layout during the O+S West/OPSIG-LDSIG conventions in January 2011. As you can see from the quality of my photos, I have not been reading all the posts about cameras on this list lately. Cheers, John Gibson Rocklin, CA ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
