Hi Michael:
I can't add much beyond what the earlier responders to your message said. I
switched to S from N about a decade ago mainly because I wanted to learn how
to scratch build freight cars and structures and not just buy RTR products.
And I model a shortline/regional carrier set in the mid 1990s.
Actually N is probably the best scae for modelers who want to replicate
mainline modern trains because of the sheer volume of products and the
ability to capture the length of them as well. That's hard to do in HO
except on big modular layouts.
So I have accumulated more than enough locomotives and cars for my purposes.
Also have some fun innovating. There was a Quality Craft model of an all
door boxcar. Somewhere along the way, I saw an article about converting them
to four door cars (for lower maintenance costs) so that's what I did. There
was a CPR bathtub gon kit from Quality Craft. When I got a couple the thin
wood to make the bottom crumbled. I probably could have used styrene but
decided my railway bought the cars and converted them to flat bottoms. Flat
cars are easy to scratchbuild and gons aren't very difficult either.
There's plenty of material to build structures. The important thing is to
decide what your railway hauls and model it.
I have some intermodal cars but doubt I will ever use them. However, no
final decision on that front.
cheers
