Everyone complained for years about all the smoke from the steam locomotive stacks.
Now we have trains with a hundred stacks. Is that progress???????? In the three hour session we had 5 freights pass--2 KCS and 3 UP double stacks. They pass within 30ft of the building, and the speaker became a little frazzled with the interrupting noise. I was at the same location about 2 years ago and it still was pretty much a run-down industrial area just off downtown. Now about half of that is now gone and very expensive 3 story homes are going up replacing the weeds, the wreckage of old production machines and forgotten concrete slabs. Much of Houston now has quiet zones where the trains don't use their horns, while in other places there are sound recordings at grade crossings. I suppose this means, if you're modeling the last few years or the 'future', you don't need much in the way of sound systems anymore. And BTW, those pre-recorded horns sound worse than even the early analog sound boards. With all this in mind, I will switch back to my transition era railroad tonite and work on a brass Southwind combine that needs a bit of factory omitted care. So that's probably going to be my FNF. We have way too much moisture around here so I probably won't be able to do any much needed painting again, but that's Texas!
