I certainly will not be buying any new S scale rolling stock from MTH,
especially not at those new prices. Sixty bucks for a freight car is bad
enough, especially considering there is nothing produced from any new tooling,
but they are really sticking it to the scale community by forcing us to pay an
additional amount for the scale wheels and truck spacer that S Helper included
in the box. The actual price for a scale car with the scale wheels and truck
spacer comes to almost $75 per car.
I think that MTH really doesn't want to be bothered with the scale market
because scalers are just too demanding, wanting models to conform with actual
prototype designs and details, and be decorated to match prototypical paint
schemes.
Their DCS control system is said to be compatible with DCC, but what about
those scale modelers running on straight DC, or those Flyer enthusiasts running
on straight AC? I suspect that the DCS boards may have a problem with at least
one of those types of controls, if not both and likely will require wiring
modifications to disable expensive electronics that the buyer has been forced
to pay for, even if they don't need it.
