I think you have to look at "apples to apples".  MTH prices are indeed up from 
SHS.  From about $300 per unit with Tsunami to $379 for an A & $349 for a B 
with Proto 3.

I purchased a DC F7 AB set from SHS back in 2007 for $399.95 and a year later 
paid $135 each for the DCC sound boards to upgrade them. That's an investment 
of $335 per unit or $670 for the AB pair.

Also MTH is sold by many dealers with a discount as compared to SHS which 
usually was only discounted during factory special sales.  

For example list price on MTH HO FA & F7 AB sets is $449, but lots of 
discounting is going on.  I've seen them from $399 to as cheap as $349, so if 
similar discounts will be available in S, price increase is not bad at all.
