Chris,
JFred has it right. Not ALL Marx stuff was as you describe. I have some
of the Santa Fe Stock cars converted to S by only adding S trucks under
them. They fit in very nicely with my AF cars (which, YES are NOT detailed
as nicely as the SHS and AM cars, etc.). Some of the Marx tooling was almost
as good as the ACG tooling. Another source of good stuff could be the
Industrial Rails tooling. I have their caboose, which is dead nuts on for S
and as detailed as the early AM cupola cabooses.
Those of us "in the hobby" are far more critical of details than the
general public. The trick is to get them interested with an inexpensive
starter set that is compatible with the better stuff, much as Tyco HO is
compatible with Proto HO, etc. Once we get them hooked, we can easily move
them up (which is why I think SHS and AM should be thinking about this idea,
keep them loyal to a Brand Name). I don't think of this as "going
backwards" but forward to a better future--and think of all the "raw
material" those "plain Jane" cars will give the scratchbuilders!
But to get the hook out there, we MUST HAVE a starter set, complete, RTR
for under $150!!! (IMHO)
Yes, we have gone around this before, and we'll go around this subject
again. Doesn't make it any less valid!!
OH, BTW, I wouldn't go for something that looks like the ACG F units,
there are *some* standards to keep! ;-)
