Is this a great hobby or what?
I made my first post to the list a few weeks ago about 2 trains on 1
loop and I learned so much that I raided the project box and got a Sam
the Semaphore Man and two 696 trips to give a bit of basic block
control. The 696's stick and I have 697's waiting in the wings once
holiday preparations are done.
The trains looked so good, but I was ready for more and I remembered the
project box had a 312 SIT just dying to be resurrected. And with the
help of Tom Jarcho and some pictures from Keith, I tackled the next
project. A great experience, I made new friends and I learned 'brushes
go in series with the field.' I'll never need another wiring diagram
again! I even restored the smoke unit; de-gunked the wick and rewound
the element and got so much smoke that I thought the smoke alarm might
sound as I finished up at 2:30 am last night.
The new project looked great, I just needed some tubing because smoky
tenders look pretty funky. And I was going to title this post just
'Favorite D.I.Y. materials.'
After about 30 minutes of on and off running time there came the dreaded
'clunk.' The 312 SIT went out of quarter. So looks like I'll be pulling
some wheels and sampling the six ways to repair loose wheels that Tom
posted the other day. But I'm sure I'll wait until I get something good
to pull the wheels with.
So what I'm asking is: 1) What are your favorite tools for this and
other jobs, and are there any I can get in a local hardware/automotive
store?
2) What are your favorite DIY materials like
tubing for the smoke in tender, or some sort of rubber band for pullmore
wheels, etc. etc..
My apologies to Doug and the other vendors but my train passion is high
at the moment, but the pockets are getting empty!
