I have a Lionel fishbelly gondola, a B & O and associated roads prototype, that I converted to S. 9 vertical ribs. I cut out the ends with lengthwise cuts, cut a strip out of the middle of the car probably 3/8" wide, to make it the same width as a Flyer gon. Filed down the edges of the ends to fit and cemented them back on. Painted the car black, attached trucks, and lettered it with a John Hall decal set.
My favorite Lionel conversion is the 6464 series boxcar body. You just run the razor saw down the two outermost grooves in the roofwalk. continue the cuts straight down through the ends. File to a perfect fit and glue the pieces together. Then file , glue, sand, etc., to hide the seams. Sand down the back side of the roofwalk on sandpaper rubber cemented to a flat board. Make it as thin as a Flyer roofwalk, and glue it back in place. You will have to do some trimming of the bottom edges too, depending on what kinds of trucks you use.
