Uh... um, "proven"? I have a Lionel trailer next to me. It measures 1.75" in width. That translates to 9' 4" in the real world. Real highway semi trailers are not allowed to exceed 8' 6" in width, many are only 8' wide. (Those are external dimensions.) The Lionel trailers are NOT S scale. Neither are they 0 scale. Like most Lionel stuff, they aren't any particular scale. The spine beams are too wide for any trailer of true S scale width. However, the wheel ways are too narrow for a trailer of true 0 scale width. The same Lionel trailer mentioned above is just a smidge under 8.25" long, or not quite 44 S scale feet. A believable dimension for length, but the excess width sticks out badly, especially when parked next to a properly scaled trailer by any one of several makers of 1/64th scale trucks (ERTL, PEM/Hartoy, SpecCast, Penjoy, Winross, UHQ...)
