Hi:
Bill, i stripped a searchlight car frame using brake fluid. Worked 
great and then you can build up your paint from the base material and 
not have to feather the edges of the old paint. Once you've made the 
decision that you're gonna repaint it, you might as well get rid of 
the old stuff so it cannot cause you problems in the future. Word of 
caution, only use the brake fluid on metal bodies. I have not tried 
this on any plastic materials but I suspect it would not be friendly 
to them.

As stated in an earlier post, there are good sources for stamps or 
decals to reinstall the lettering.
