S-Gaugers, In the spirit of recent kit bashing conversation:
We have a Lionel beacon on an AF display set because the original AF one was sort of lame. The vibror motor was a nifty Lionel invention that spun objects much better than convention air heat principle used by Gilbert. Today�s Lionel and MTH Beacons are cheap and with the copious amounts of reproduction AF beacon�s hitting the market (MTH, Gilbert Reproductions, Lionel(?) ... etc) I have begun to think of kit bashing a modern Lionel beacon with a Reproduction AF beacon. So, I have been toying with the idea of converting an AF flyer beacon to have a Lionel top � that is to use the vibror motor and beacon lens unit from Lionel. It would look aesthetically nicer on the set and provide the better performance of a Lionel model. Has anyone done such a conversion or have any comments on the feasibility of the effort? I wish Mike at MTH would have done it for me! Why replicate a pretty poor design... I think there was an April One edition of S Gaugian a few years ago that claimed that such a unit was manufactured by Gilbert as a special for White Tower Hamburgers (home of the slider). This once popular upscale restaurant chain in the North East provided the beacon as part of the Holiday dinner promotional special set. Of course, the famous ��Buy a Turkey Hamburger, get a train� monikered box car also appeared in this rare collectible set. Or was its Whites Auto?... oh well, a minor detail... Unfortunately for Gilbert, the product and the promotional never really caught on. Keep smiling... Actually its enough trouble to motivate me to buy an MTH reproduction coal loader just to get a high quality quick performing reproduction accessory. Soon we will all lament about the good old days... When the products were made in South Korea at labor rates of 25 cents/hour versus made in the People's Republic of China at labor rates of 25 cents/week...
