Tim,

If this piece is genuine and he has a certificate from the preservation 
society stating so, why didn't/don't they want it? Surely they could buy it 
if genuine and important to the museum. If they want it, I'll be the first 
guy to give $10 or $20� towards purchasing it and getting it home. If that 
piece were stolen as alluded to by some, don't you think the law would be all 
over that guy? Who knows, maybe that number plate was removed by the Union 
Army when they confiscated it during the civil war in order to camouflage 
it's identity. Even though they didn't get far with it, that could have 
happened. They would most likely have thrown it into a creek, river, canyon, 
gully, etc., who knows. In any case it is highly unlikely that this guy or 
someone he knew stole it. If so, then they are complete idiots for putting it 
on Ebay.� In any case, if he/she came by it legally, it's theirs, and this 
isn't a socialist country (yet), so he/she can do as they darn well see fit.
