Guys,

I sure didn't mean to start a firestorm when I posted the original
message about the General's number plate auction. But this seems to
prove that many more of you are interested in early railroad history
than it appears.

I was initially alerted to the auction on the Yahoo EarlyRails group,
where this has been a hot topic. One of the members e-mailed the
curator of the museum (George Deeming) where the General is preserved,
to let him know about it and see what he knew.

Here's what George Deeming at Kennesaw
                has to say:

"We had him come into the museum
something like a year ago trying to
sell this piece. I didn't see it but my
                assistant did. If the seller
has a letter from Bogle authenticating
the plate then I believe it to
be the real McCoy. But we didn't see
anything like a letter at that
time, however he may have had Bogle
look at it since then. Our budget
was going into the rebuilding of the
museum and we had little in the
way of acquisition funds back then. The
                plate currently on the General
at the museum is a repro so this very
well may be the real deal. I
know that the General was involved in an accident with
freight cars
back in the 1880's and this could account for how he
got it or he may
have had some connections with the rebuilding back in
the 1960's and
possibly the number plate was switched out then. I'm
checking with
Bogle to see if he did authenticate it. The ad sounds
like you're
getting an autographed copy of 'The General and The
Texas' that Bogle
co-authored. It doesn't say anything about 'an
authentication from
Bogle'. Personally, I'd be a little leery about
spending $5,000.
without looking this one over, first... I don't know
if this clears
anything up...but its what I know. George Deeming,
Curator - The
Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History."
