If it is stolen, there is no way anybody could have "come by it" legally. Any purchase of the item, no mater how far you are removed from it being stolen is still "receiving stolen property" or "buying stolen property". I have heard of RRs going to swap meets and confiscate switch locks, keys and other RR items with the RR's name on them because they were stolen sometime or other as the RR never sold them to anybody.
