John Brockmann, caught up in the f'ray over the General's number plate on
E-Bay, asked:
>How about it Chris Z?

What???? How did I get sucked into this????
Well OK, John, you opened the door. These remarks are not directed at just
you, though. There have been a number of posts. Only a couple have
brandished the voice of reason.

This is a case of some guys on this list flying into an emotional tizzy over
something they know almost nothing about. It helps to have the facts before
making decisions.

I went to the E-Bay page and I am struck by the open and apparently
straightforward nature of this auction, including much offered documentation
and provenance. It would be a fairly simple matter to do some research on
this. For one, contact the Civil War museum in Kennesaw and the Cyclorama
museum in Atlanta. They can provide a great deal of information about the
engines in the chase and the travels of their various parts. The curator of
the Kennesaw museum might be very interested to hear of this auction.
Secondly, contact the seller and ask him (NICELY!) how he comes to be in
possession of this artifact. Discuss with him your concerns about it being
lost to a private collector when it might best be rejoined with the
locomotive. Perhaps there is a story there.
Third, do a little research on the engines and find out about the different
numbers and plates they have worn over the years. The Internet is an open
book.

Finally, do the math. At $5000 and each guy chipping in $10, you need 500
contributors. I just spent 4 months getting the money straightened out and
product shipped to 85 guys in that Caig project. Who is going to organize a
500 Man March for the General's number plate? Come on, step forward. Get
it started and I'll send you my check.

Or, alternatively, you can write a quick post on a trainlist and demand that
the owner of a valuable antique donate it, for free, to a museum because
that's what you think is right. And it doesn't cost you anything because
talk is cheap.
