Wow, I knew I'd hear about this one when Jay wrote me to say that #155 is the track weight SHS trackage represents, not its height, as in code 155.
I took a brief look at the SHS online catalog, my 2003 & 2002 catalogs and did not see a reference to the commonly used "code" of the rail system. So I don't really know the code for SHS rail. It's probably there, I just didn't see it. I apologize to all whom I might have offended with my remarks. My intent was not to slam a product by one of our finest manufactures of S gauge equipment, but to comment on Chris Z's remarks about standardization of S gauge trackage. I felt he left out American Models which also markets a fine track system and was there ahead of SHS. If SHS is to be the standard bearer of our S trackage design, I for one, will support it. I just hope they come out with a turnout that is affordable, by comparison, and a bit more gentle in switch number, like a #6 or so. BTW, I just looked at the prices for both companies, that's where SHS mentions the rail is code 125. The flex track is about the same price, but the turnouts..... As far as the 5" spacing, I know that came from ACG and thought it so stay there. Anyone running a pure AF layout would probably not what .125 rail. Just doesn't have that tinplate look. I thought the threads about bending AF track to different radii were quite interesting. That's what I would have done when I was a kid--if I'd thought about and knew how. That's pure Flyer. But if your going for high rail, you're looking at 3" centers or a hair less. But you know, when it comes to compatibly, the difference in height between .172, .148 & .125 is tiny. The difference between .148 and .125 rail is 3/128" (what is the thickness of a piece of paper?), about the same for .172 to .148. So to get a train from one rail system to the other, all you have to do is line up the rail and tack it in place--add power, run trains. I should have done more homework before I made my comments, but I didn't. It was just an opinion.
