Not quite. After successfully compiling from source, you then issue
these commands:

$ SAGE_APP_BUNDLE=yes
$ export SAGE_APP_BUNDLE
$ ./sage -bdist x.y.z

I had to do the above for the 3.4.x series. The steps are explained in
