Well, in order to have some functionality above and beyond what R or other numerical systems offer, I think you should emphasize symbolic computation. Wrapping numerical functions is nice but doesn't offer anything fundamentally different. Making it possible to do statistical stuff with symbolic or mixed symbolic-numerical computations would be very exciting and useful. Maybe you're already working on that, I can't tell. If so sorry for the bother.
