I have seen and had reports of the error messages

  "sh: kpsewhich: not found"

several times during the last 6-8 *months* for people using Linux.
(It's not only a new problem.  It was also fixed for those people by
installing tex.) Maybe the apperance of the problem above is a new
instance of it though.
