It definitely could be an issue on my campus server. I have 3GB in a virtual machine right now (I'm writing an internal school grant for more memory soon). Fortunately (?!), I haven't been using Sage in my classes as much as I intended, so usage is light right now.
This might be a place for a setting in the admin page, with it defaulting to "start up Sage automatically". That would let people with limited resources turn that off.
