I did not follow the history about mpir and gmp, so forgive me for
not knowing the reasons behind the fork, and the childish behavior of
developers.

But this smells somewhat like what I saw in another case, when Xorg
took over XFree86.

Short story, Xorg people just like to tell others and themselves,
about how good they are, and how bad XFree86 was.

So, I believe this mpir vs gmp issue where there isn't a friendly
relationship from both sides, will just cause harm.

Maybe would not get to this point, but for example, when XFree86
released version 4.8.0, I made *functional* rpms for Mandriva, but was
asked to not consider to add them as "contrib" packages, to avoid
causing problems with Mandriva France packagers, and confusion to
users. But having two, inevitably soon or later, to be incompatible
versions of the same library is just going to cause people to have to
choose one or another.

[ I don't have sides on XFree86/Xorg or gmp/mpir ]
[ I was a volunteer contributor to XFree86 in the late 90s and early 0s ]
[ I did not work with open source or a Linux distro for a few years,
and when "coming back", after one year sending patches, I got commit
rights in Xorg, and after another year, one single person removed my
commit rights without warning or questions (everyone breaks builds,
and corrects them shortly, right?). But now, so far, I am doing
something that I like, and packaging scientific software, sage
included... ]
