I just checked that the earlier version of R (r-2.9.2) in sage 4.3.0.1, did
exibit this problem too, so it is *not* a result of the upgrade to R 2.10.1
Clearly the problem has existed for some time.
It would be good to generate a set of tests which could detect this, then fix
it.
