If the goal were to test that the R functions in these packages are working correctly, that is documented at
http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-admin.html#Testing-a-Unix-Installation In particular, one might want to call library(tools) testInstalledBasic("basic") which would probably take less than a minute on decent hardware. That link also explains how to run every example in every Recommended package, but that would take a lot longer.
