It is now ready for review. The patch involves some trivial doctest fixes. While all doctests pass, I hope that the patch will not break too much external code. At least, it seems to be guaranteed that K(gap(p))==p for any element p of K, where K is either a number field or a cyclotomic field (this requirement was not always fulfilled in the past).
