It works on this example in your opinion.  If you want to deal with square 
roots in this
case using some bogus relationship between the choice of branch and some

If it were mathematically meaningful to do so, it would generalize to say, 
cube roots,
don't you think?

What you've written is just a hack.  Not that maxima's general simplifier 
inspires confidence.

Maybe consult someone who has taken college courses in complex variables, 
conformal mapping,
and modern algebra.
