the ecl (Embeddable Common-Lisp) version shipped with Debian is considered fine 
by Sage but is apparently not really compatible.

you can try to use "./configure --with-system-ecl=no"

It did the trick for me (Debian Sid as well).

To be honest, I didn't (yet) look more precisely why this is the case, but 
there already are open issues on Github regarding this issue.
