Just yesterday, I got a chance to talk to Saligaonetter Yvonne Vaz-Ezdani of Salmona, and, on asking, she narrated her recent trauma when she was a victim of a house-breaking and theft case earlier this month.
It happened in broad daylight. The culprit, noting that the house was empty, used a crow-bar to break into the main front door lock, and then had quite boldly entered inside the house! Fortunately, the culprit got apprehended, after being trapped in the house. (Apparently, a retired policeman Patil was passing by, noticed, and had the presence of mind to bolt the front-door, thus locking the culprit within the house.) Alert neighbours (including a maid) raised the alarm. The incident happened between 11 am and noon, when Yvonne had just stepped out to go to Mapusa. The call that came through to her in Mapusa stunned Yvonne, as one would not even expect a house-breaking case at that time of the day! She rushed home, to find that the neighbours and police had surrounded the house, and caught the culprit, who had barricaded himself indoors, after having to break through a tiny part of the roofing to gain entry themselves. If I understood anything wrong, Yvonne can correct me. It was later found out that the culprit was involved in other out-of-State crime too, and was living at rented premises in Arradi, Candolim. Apparently the cuplrit (and possibly a woman associate) had been keeping watch on the house for a day or two. Only goes to show that we can't take our safety for granted. But of course, these things strike when we're least expecting. Strangely enough, another house in the close vicinity had been burgled just a few days earlier. If I understood right, the police had been slow on coping with the case, and even wanted to know whether Yvonne herself wanted to follow it up in the courts. When the law is broken in a criminal case, where is the choice before the State on whether to prosecute or not? It is mandatory that such issues be followed up to their logical end. This is a trend which needs concern and attention. A house-breaking case by daytime in a busy residential locality points to extra boldness on the part of the culprits.
