I'd been to the Salmona spring the day before yesterday with Bindu Vaz
scouting for a trek destination for the kids and was horrified to see the
foundation dug for a big construction barely 25-30 mtrs. from the spout
(pipe in the wall). Around the depression in front of the wall are ghastly
looking shelters for the labourers built of bamboo and black plastic
sheeting. Wasn't there some restriction on construction in that area?
Remember some hullabaloo in that regard but was sailing in those days so
don't know the details. I had some great times in the pristine surroundings
and proudly took my Mumbai / sailor friends there. Every one of them admired
the atmosphere.

Of late we have garbage sorting in the fields, water tankers dribbling all
along the road from dawn to well past dusk, boundary walls along the CHOGM
road used as hoardings, traffic jams at Samrat restaurant caused by buses
and other vehicles parking on both sides of the road leaving barely enough
space for up/down traffic to squeeze through one way at a time, while the
drivers enjoy Xacuti and same problem outside the temple both at Muddavaddi.

I shifted here because I felt it was a healthier environment for the kids
compared to the polluted ugly concrete jungle called Mumbai but Saligao
seems to be heading down the same drain. My first reaction was 'There goes
the neighbourhood'. But, on second thought can we get together to stop such
desecration of our beautiful village? Can we together do something to
preserve the Saligao we've lived in, so future generations can enjoy what we
had and not just talk about how nice Saligao was in 'the good old days' and
then migrate! Any solutions? Effective ones, legislation perhaps, not just a
flash in the pan like the fiasco to stop sale of water from the well near A.
Clotil / U. Peter Vaz's house in Donvaddo which I witnessed when on leave
years back.
