What about a "set it and forget it" maintenance mode - a temporary maintenance window instead of a permanent maintenance window.
Put item X on maintenance during time frame Y. When the time frame has passed, the maintenance setting is removed. Sometimes maintenance is scheduled for the same time every week. Sometimes it isn't.
