Thanks, Shaun! The workflow shown in that PayPal picture is much as
I'd like my store to operate.
But the Satchmo templates currently collect billing and shipping
information even if the user selects PayPal for payment.
Here's how I'd like my store to work, ideally:
1. On the checkout page, the customer sees the shipping selector
first, or perhaps both the payment selector and the shipping
selector on the same page.
2. Based on the shipping choice, the customer may be presented with
a shipping address form. (I'm in a university town, and I offer
free shipping using campus mail to addresses at my university.
A customer who selects this option must provide a campus address.)
Otherwise, my site won't ask for billing or shipping information
-- that will be left for PayPal to do.
3. At the end of checkout, the customer is redirected to the PayPal
site. PayPal returns a shipping address to me, which I'll use
in the customer hasn't given me another address.
Can this be done with the current PayPal payment module? Can I
accomplish this mostly by rearranging templates, without rewriting
large amounts of Python or Javascript?
And similarly for Google Checkout?
Thanks again,
- Allan

Hi Allan,
I had issues with paypal developer site on Friday I had to create a new
gmail account just for the purpose.
It also killed 2 of my test accounts - something is wrong with the password
reset function so I now try to avoid that.
As for the paypal address thing have a read of this:
https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_additional-payment-ref-impl1
And yes you can get feedback of the shipping and billing stuff from the IPN
post back or you read it from paypal when using express checkout...

Hello all,
When my store uses the PayPal payment module, what shipping and
billing information does Satchmo send to PayPal? If the user doesn't
already have a PayPal account, does PayPal use that information, or
ask the user to enter it all again? If the user already has a PayPal
account with shipping and billing information on file, does that
information override what the user entered on the Satchmo checkout
page? Are the two sets of information compared? Does PayPal feed its
shipping and billing info back to Satchmo?
I plan to open a store using only PayPal and Google Checkout and not
processing credit cards myself. I'm wondering whether I need to
collect billing information on my checkout page at all. I certainly
don't want to annoy my customers by making them enter a lot of
unnecessary information.
BTW, I would test some of this myself, but I have not yet been able to
open a functioning PayPay Sandbox account. Every time I go through
the process, I respond to the confirmation email and am told that the
confirmation was successful, but the email address and password don't
work. I go through the password recovery link and am told that PayPal
doesn't even know the email address that I just registered! Has
anyone else had this problem?
Thanks,
- Allan
