We've run into a very similar issue on more than one of our Satchmo sites. For some reason that we haven't been able to figure out, memcached stops working. That causes e-commerce to stop working. We restart memcached and then restart the server and then everything's fine again. But - why does this happen in the first place? Our host is Webfaction; they confirmed in the most recent case that they did not make any changes to the server in the 48 hour window prior to the memcached failure.
