Well, if you use the true html verbatim, it will respect your linebreaks even
without adding br.
But as I suggested in my previous comment, your message will only have the
partial verbatim, that will not use the true html verbatim, and as such will
call nl2br().

I was not clear about that, but that will be only for true verbatim, not for
the partial verbatim.
And the point of verbatim will be to provide code, patch, whatever that
should not be altered. And this should be fixed.
But I agree, apart for that purpose, fixed fonts is a pain in the ass. My web
browser is actually configured to use a non-fixed font even as fixed font,
because some websites abuse of it.
(But I'd say it's my problem if I wont notice any difference, it is not
relevant here, what matter is that Savane will ask for the fixed font for the
verbatim case).

Frankly, I do not want to simply do test for this. We wont be able to check
the 13000 items posted at LCG Savannah and we cannot publish a version that
may alter inappropriately old item. So even if we do test and dont detect
problems, we'll still have to add tags for the old item so they are not
affected by the wiki formatting because they were not meant to be formatted
this way.

Why not. But in this case, shouldn't we use double signs everywhere for
cohesion sake?
