Can you precise your environment? (distro, browser, php, mysql...)
We often use Debian sarge (php4, mysql4.0/4.1 - mysql5 seems to break a
decent set of webapps) as the underlying distribution, maybe you could try to
install Debian or use a Debian jail (deboostrap&&chroot...).
That being said I never had this problem.
