I also noted that the package file used pulse audio rather than alsa. I use alsa, but as I said I am ok with doing my own build to suit my needs and also live with less support, but the if the package is expected to include the files, one would assume they would be there.
In addition to the convenience of using jack audio, I also launch multiple instances of jack meter pairs for monitoring and troubleshooting. They show up as bridge patches in jack, and can be assigned to an empty separate workspace. By configuring them in the connections window they have proved invaluable at troubleshooting. I have on occasion used as many as eight pairs of gfx meters to troubleshoot.
