I was asked a question today that I think I know the answer to, but I need to confirm and I can't seem to find it written out anywhere.
If we have a farm with N MySQL slave instances, how do we select which instance to open the connection to? For example when I'm going to do a read I need to connect to a slave, but which one? Ideally we'd like to select the most lightly loaded instance. I think the answer is that using the domain name for instances of that role will randomly (or maybe round-robin) select an instance of that role. That doesn't guarantee that the instance we select will be the lightest loaded instance, but in general all instances will be loaded to about the same level. Is that correct? If not, please clarify.
