Men of Tomorrow: geeks gangsters and the birth of the comic book was 
written by Gerard Jones, by the way.

And the book I couldn't finish, Blind Lake, was by Robert Charles 
Wilson.  I checked him out after reading a column by Stephen King in 
Entertainment Weekly where he said Wilson was the best Science 
Fiction author he knew of--

Try it for yourselves.  The work had no pizazz--an affliction of 
much of what I call Middle Class Suburban Post Cyberpunk SF these 
days
