Right now I'm reading Pat Murphy's postapocalyptic THE CITY, NOT LONG AFTER, which is beautifully written -- very lyrical. Also just finished Naomi Novik's alternate-history fantasy BLACK POWDER WAR, third in the Temeraire series, about an alternate 1800s Earth in which sentient dragons basically become the air force for every nation and save England during the Napoleonic wars. It's better than I was expecting -- I usually hate alternate-history stuff, but this has some interesting allegories for race and class strife in British society. Slavery still exists in this world, but the dragons themselves are slaves as well, and when one of them realizes that dragons could be treated better, he decides to upend British society to demand "dragon equality". It isn't finished yet, but I'm interested in seeing where this goes.
