Ah sooo true! People still have the bruises they got in school about reading. Somewhere along the line teachers knocked out any sense of pleasure out of reading.
I suppose the same can be said for education. Some people think education is something you have to go through and then be finished with. Much of it's socio-economic, I guess. Their parents didn't think books were important, and neither did their grand-parents. Now some folks love education. Right now for instance, I'm sitting here listening to the Farm channel. Why? No particular reason. Just figure I'd just leave it on and listen to it all day today. I like being educated and learning new things. I could watch Discovery Channel just to study about some stupid little squid or the physic qualities of water or different kinds of wool for making sweaters. That love of education, and the love of learning something that in the long run doesn't matter...is what a lot of folks totally lack. Why? Because in school they were either taught to A) Study and learn in order to pass or B) Study only what you love. Two extremes which create folks who simply don't understand the joys of learning. As for the Bible, I read it every day..and have done so all my life (raised by a minister grandfather) and I don't see anything wrong with reading it. Folks who read only their Bible come into two categories: folks who would be reading or folks who would not be reading but who will read the Bible because they feel they have to. They probably wouldn't be reading anything else. But in my experience, folks who read the Bible tend to read other religious stuff too. Usually psychological, social, theological stuff...of varying degrees. And of course, how much they read depends on whether or not they read books in school only to pass the grade and if they were taught --wrongly-- to only read things that interested them. I always tell my son, "Read everything even if you aren't interested. Reading it will make you interested." Black parents fall into the Education trap which says, "Use personal interests and personal joy to make education meaningful." That's like saying to a kid, "Okay, if you don't want to learn how to play piano and if you don't enjoy swimming you don't have to go to swim class anymore." Big mistake! And major bullcr*p! A kid has to be told to do tons of stuff even if he doesn'e lilke it. It widens his experience...and causes him to think of life as a continuing education. Okay, enough of this former teacher's ramblings. -C Carole McDonnell Wind Follower June 2007 Juno Books www.geocities.com/scifiwritir/Publications.html carole.mcdonnell (at) gmail (dot)com --- In SciFiNoir_Lit@yahoogroups.com, "Chris Hayden" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > <<From my experience most people when they get out of school do not > read.
