I've talked to several ATI and Vortech owners, as well as being very
good friends with a person who installs them professionally. The
people I know with ATIs all say "buy the Vortech - I wish I had."
The people I know with Vortechs all say "buy the Vortech, I'm glad
I did." Everything Charlie is correct (I can't speak to the
Powerdyne or Paxton due to having only seen one application of
each). He and several others have pointed out that due to poor
impeller design, the ATI is much less efficient at making boost.
That means it adds more heat to the charge per pound of boost
than the Vortech. Therefore, the ATI _needs_ the intercooler just
to have similar intake charge temps as the Vortech _without_ an
cooler. I have never seen a car blow a head gasket with either
supercharger, so I would speculate that other things are going
wrong there. There are a LOT of ways to ruin a motor with a
supercharger if you do things improperly - any supercharger
including nitrous (supercharger in a bottle). I personally know
several people with uncooled Vortechs that use their car as a daily
driver and have no problems. They weakest of these cars has well
over 400rwhp, and the strongest made around 650rwhp (T-trim on a
built Windsor block, non-intercooled). Running without intercoolers
works just fine if the supercharger is designed well.
Of course, intercooling any pressurized application is generally a
good thing, and Vortechs benefit from it as well. However,
intercooling has its drawbacks. First is packaging. They take a lot
of space. Second, they effectively add all their volume to the
intake plenum. That means throttle response slows down and lag
time increases. Finally, the locations they often get placed in
make them susceptible to damage from debris. Oh, and I forgot to
mention cost. You just have to decide if the cost is worth the
benefits. For the Vortech, they may not be. For the ATI, you
really don't have a choice, because without the cooler, the intake
temps will be prohibitive.
Finally, regarding this "guarantee" for money back if you can prove
ATI is slower than Vortech, that's called a marketing gimmick. To
conclusively prove through rigorous experimentation that the ATI is
slower, you would have to spend thousands of hours and six
figures worth of money in a lab and on the track. You can't
possibly prove to ATI's satisfaction that their system isn't as good
a Vortech. Besides, that still doesn't take into account the quality
and ease-of-installation of the kit.
