I think you mean disable

ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support  --->
IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices  --->
CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE

That's how it is using 2.4.3.

Nevertheless, I don't think that is the problem.
It sounds to me that the only way to keep this disk up is to nail it to 
the perch.
