I thought that it might be helpful to point out that the "basic" 2 disk
version of Mandrake is in fact the same version that you get when you buy a
box set, the only difference being the manuals and support.

Mandrake is fast becoming one of my favourite distros, it's nice to have the
full advantages of software that isn't compiled to run on a 386, especially
since it's a pain in the neck to recompile everything for i586+.

Are there any distros that let you do the BSD 'make world' thing?

Subject: [scottish] Mandrake packages

Thanks to whoever it was who pointed out that php, MySQL etc. were included
on the basic 2-disk Mandrake set. I might not need to buy the full version
after all.

I initially just did a fairly minimal installation to check that it would
run on my PC. I'll need to go back and update it to make sure I've got the
stuff I want loaded.

One problem I've had as a newbie is that I've found it difficult to discover
what packages are in each of the suggested configuration options without
installing them.
