I thought I needed it because in the initial artivle on Mail Servers one of
the first things you had to do was modify a file in the DNS setup that they
did the issue before. I then thought that you would have to have got the DNS
working before proceeding onto the mail server.

Even if this is not correct I think I shall still setup DNS as it seems like
a good idea.

Why's that? Leaving aside that issue, there are benefits to using a local
DNS so.....

Yes, its unusual that you would have the bind daemon but no startup script
(bind is the package including named):

check that you don't already have a program servicing DNS requests by
running:

         netstat -a | less

& look for lines like

         tcp 0 0
lan.lan.lan.86:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
         tcp 0 0
127.0.0.1:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
         udp 0 0 lan.lan.lan.86:53 0.0.0.0:*
         udp 0 0 127.0.0.1:53 0.0.0.0:*

if these ARE there then there is a name server already running.

If they are not there, then check you have the bind package installed:
         rpm -q bind
If it is there then _should_ be a corresponding init file. Best idea would
be to try re-installing the package from your CD (NB `rpm -q -l bind` will
give you a list of the files which should have been installed).

NB bind is something of a target for hackers - make sure its properly
firewalled.
