I am using haXe 1.15 - so aim for at least that version.

I vaguely recall hearing about that. Safe to say, my project is real and
more or less works as a proof of concept. Though it doesn't run BASS or
GOB games. But i'm being a bit more realistic by just supporting SCUMM6.

Making a SCUMM interpreter in Java wouldn't be that difficult. In fact,
i'd go so far to say that it would be easier to get everything working
in it (compared to haXe), as it actually has proper integer types.

Failing that if someone got haXe to output Java bytecode (or at least
just Java source), essentially hitting two birds with one stone.

Which reminds me, i still haven't managed to get the image decode
routines working properly. When i have time, i'm contemplating plonking
loads of printf statements in the scummc implementation then comparing
them with equivalent printout from my haXe code. Maybe then i'll get to
the bottom of it. I reckon that the solution will likely be a
ridiculously simple one.
