Geeks come up with mobile app to help the blind read faces
Baishali Adak, Mar 11, 2014, DHSN :

Campus innovation

Contrary to popular belief that the Indian education system does not promote
innovation, Indian students are coming up with top-of-the-line science projects
and even winning prestigious international competitions worldwide.

Recently, four students from different private engineering colleges in
Delhi-NCR developed a mobile application for the visually impaired and bagged
the first prize at the influential Geeklist#hack4good competition. Their
invention helps the visually challenged recognise faces and even the emotions
reflected therein. Not surprising, their project has fetched them $10,000 as
cash prize, free trips to UK and US, and even a host of national and
international sponsors who are willing to buy their invention.

The students are Sonu Raj and Siddarth Sudhakar of Apeejay Stya University in
Sohna, Hitesh Dua of Amity School of Engineering in Noida and Manish Bisht of
GB Pant Engineering
College, Delhi.

The Hack4good competition is sponsored by a San Francisco-based organisation
called Geeklist. The forum encourages software development and entrepreneurship
to help in social areas such as disability, healthcare, education, human
rights, agriculture and humanitarian aid. It is held online every year across
50 cities worldwide. This time they had participation from over 5,000 software
developers across the globe, which came down to 2,500 at the semi-final and the
project developed by
the Indian students at the grand finale.

Bachelor of Technology

IIIrd year student Sonu Raj tells us, "We knew that we wanted to develop a
mobile application but weren't sure of the social issue to target. Then we
noticed that blind persons are a much neglected section when it comes to mobile
use and applications. The biggest problem that visually-impaired persons
encounter is recognising people by the face. This is also the story of those
affected by Prosopagnosia or Face Blindness - a condition caused by brain
injury. We decided that we have to help them."

Sonu's junior in college, BTech Ist year student Siddarth adds, "It took us a
week to develop 'White Cane.' This android application recognises faces and
speaks out their names. It is also able to describe the facial features of a
person right down to his mood. Not just that, it stores a database of faces and
people to which more can be added or deleted at will. It starts up with a hard
key
button, which is easy to locate and operate by the
visually challenged."

The students proudly share that the judges were most impressed at the "focused
and technologically-sound" project. "The judges were extremely pleased with the
execution and presentation of this project - the voice interface, the added
features of understanding emotion - it just blew them away!" says Hitesh Dua of
Amity School of Engineering.

Now the youngsters are also planning to test their application on a target
audience to get better feedback for 'White Cane'.

"From a video we put up on YouTube, we have already received a comment from a
patient of Prosopagnosia. This has boosted our confidence immensely. We want
White Cane to ease the lives of the visually impaired who form a significant
part of our society. It's a proud moment," added Manish Bisht of
GB Pant Engineering
College, Delhi.

you're correct that it works, only on BSNL and MTNL Delhi and mumbai. I just

[AI] Book Review: - The Story of Corporate Social Responsibility in India

2014-11-03 Thread avinash shahi
Noshir H Dadrawala (nos...@capindia.in) heads the Centre for
Advancement of Philanthropy, Mumbai.
Business & Community - The Story of Corporate Social Responsibility in
India by Pushpa Sundar (New Delhi: Sage Response), 2013; pp 408, Rs
895.
http://www.epw.in/book-reviews/story-csr-india.html
There is a lot of excitement in India with the new Companies Act 2013,
particularly its infamous Section 135 which makes corporate social
responsibility (CSR) mandatory for companies meeting certain criteria
of net-worth, turnover or net-profit. CSR however is not a new concept
in India. Some companies like the Tata group have pioneered it long
before even this term was coined. But the buzz around CSR continues
unabated. There is still a lot of doubt and confusion in the mind of
companies that have hitherto seldom been engaged in CSR. Therefore,
Pushpa Sundar’s Business & Community – The Story of Corporate Social
Responsibility in India with a foreword by Ratan Tata could not have
been published at a more opportune time.

This book provides a unique historical perspective of corporate
citizenship in India, tracing the course of business engagement with
communities over a span of one and a half centuries. In a little under
400 pages this easy-to-read, jargon-free hardbound volume reiterates
the need for businesses to earn public trust and details how best this
can be done.

Being Socially Responsible

The book lays greater emphasis on “being socially responsible” rather
than just “doing CSR” as most companies erroneously believe and
practise. It urges companies to extend their imagination beyond
chasing short-term personal financial gain to creating the most
cost-efficient products and services harnessing the latest technology
to meet the genuine needs of the largest section of society. According
to the author,

Business on its part needs the consent and cooperation of society as
well as of government to operate effectively and to make profits. In
the long term there is no hope for business without all-round and
equitable development of society. Corporations need communities and
vice versa. It is a social contract that is mutually beneficial (p 2).

The author believes that Indian CSR has an organic evolution from
within its own history and culture which sets it apart from that in
the West. “Dynastic, rather than institutional, ownership still
characterises Indian business” (p 11), she avers and adds that in
contemporary times “the preference for keeping control over CSR
activities has meant that companies prefer to operationalise their
work internally through their own departments rather than through
external agencies like non-profit organisations” (p 12).

Today CSR is broadly defined as ethical behaviour of a company towards
society. It means engaging directly with local communities,
identifying their basic needs and integrating their needs with
business goals and strategic intent. On the other hand, government
perceives CSR as the business’s contribution to the nation’s
sustainable goals. It is also about how business takes into account
the economic, social and environmental impact of the way it operates.

CSR is a vast canvas and while companies may choose philanthropy or
contribute to society through partnerships to create shared value and
support new ideas, the author is quick to remind us that “‘socially
responsible and ethical behavior’ is a must” (p 48).

The chapter on merchant communities belonging to various religions is
quite interesting. While in the case of the Parsis, because of their
greater westernisation, their philanthropic outlook was also more
Western, the Chettiars are known for their systematic and methodical
pursuit of wealth, facilitated by elaborate accounting procedures.

Corporate Philanthropy

The rise and growth of “corporate philanthropy” in India is vividly
captured. Undoubtedly, the single-most important factor influencing
business philanthropy in the pre-Independence period was the emergence
in the 1920s of Mahatma Gandhi as a political and social leader.
Though most businessmen of the time found it difficult to accept
Gandhi’s theory of trusteeship fully and few became trustees to the
extent he recommended, nevertheless, the theory influenced many
including G D Birla, Jamnalal Bajaj and Lala Shri Ram.

According to the book, the 1990s ushered in the contemporary phase of
business-community engagement which we now refer to as CSR. This
decade reaffirmed the need for business to be more responsible towards
society and in broadening the concept of responsibility to include
corporate philanthropy, sustainable wealth creation, good corporate
governance, inclusive business practices, creating shared value and
hybrid value creation and advocacy and action to achieve globally
accepted goals in development.

The Millennium Declaration at the United Nations Millennium Summit in
September 2000 led to 190 countries signing the Millennium Development
Goals (MDG), which ranged from halving global

a free version of Duxberry is available. You can google it. You can use it
only for creating .brf files. To convert to text you may have to use
another software called win braile translator. I am not sure, but
professional versions of either of these softwares may do both the things.

It is pity to tell you that, very low baground family students and the
dust or scrap left by private inistitutes are being admitted in
government schools. health, education and transport must be in the
public sector only.

In a shocking incident, teachers at the government high school at
Durgigudi locality here forced Godawari M., a physically challenged
girl, to take here transfer certificate (TC) and appear for the 10th
standard examination as an external candidate as she had an "average"
academic record.

Along with Godawari, five other 10th standard students in the school
whom the teachers considered "poor" in studies have been issued
transfer certificates and they have been asked to appear for SSLC exam
as external candidates.

Parents, members of School Development Management Committee, and
representatives of civil society organisations had staged a protest on
the school premises against this.

Murali, Godawari's father, had lodged a complaint with Minister of
State for Primary and Secondary Education Kimmane Ratnakar on
Wednesday, and the latter has directed a probe into it.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction B.C. Basavarajappa told The
Hindu that, prima facie , it seemed that with the objective to secure
100 per cent results for the school, the teachers had asked the
students with average academic record to take the TC and appear for
the exam as external candidates, which is against the law.

A panel, comprising senior officials of the department, had been
formed to probe into the incident. All the six students for whom TCs
were issued would be enrolled back to the school, he said.

Mr. Murali told this correspondent that even after the issue of TC,
the students were attending classes but their names were to be deleted
from the register. They were to appear for the exam as external
candidates.

As a major chunk of parents who send their wards to this school are
either non-literate or have limited education, they were ignorant of
this practice.

"The teachers have behaved in an inhuman manner," said Mr. Murali.

Gopalakrishna, the local councillor, said that when efforts were being
made to bring back the out-of school children to the purview of formal
education system through Sarva Shikshana Abhiyan and other schemes,
the teachers here have acted in a contrary manner.

Anantha, a social activist who was part of the protest, said that the
teachers here feared that poor results would result in their transfer.

Re: [AI] hindi PDF reading

2014-11-03 Thread Him Prasad Gautam
hi,
If in Hindi unicode, then this is not a barrier. Just a matter of some
extra effort.
In many cases, just copy and paste at MS word is sufficient.
In some cases, we may have to convert it to word too.
Alternatively, just paste at notepad makes the text accessible.
However, the format gets distorted.
If in non-unicode font, then it is a real barrier.

Re: [AI] how to read epub files?

2014-11-03 Thread Dr Brijesh [Walk of Hope]
Hello Ashmira:

EPUB is an international standard format for reading books in free-flowing
as well as fixed-format layouts. Most of the EPUB Books are free-flowing
content files as you have mentioned.

You can read EPUB Books or Documents on iPad, iPhone, any Android based
handheld device or on a PC or Mac.

The various handheld devices come equipped with the software to read EPUB
files. If you have to read Online using a Browser, your choice should be to
use Google Chrome and the "Readium" Web Chrome Extension which can be
downloaded from Chrome Apps Store for free or from . This
is a free download.

Now, the English and other European Language files could be played as *Digital
Talking Books* using the *Text to Speech (TTS) **technolo**gy*in-built
in handheld
devices. There are special handheld devices with Assistive Technology for
visually challenged people.

Please also note that EPUB format has been derived from DAISY XML format,
which essentially is focussed for the people requiring accessiblity. So,
there is not much difference between EPUB and a DAISY XML format. Many
devices allow playing both EPUB and DAISY formats on them.

Unfortunately, one of the best reading software for EPUB and DAISY formats,
ReadHear from gH LLC USA is highly priced at around USD 120.00.

For your information, has many free DAISY
compliant ebooks available for free downloads. You need a registration
though.

All the Best,

Hi Arjun,

Lexis Nexis is pretty much accessible including the commentaries.
Simple web page navigation I would call it. It has commentaries by
renound authors like Mullah, Ratanlal, Ramaiya, etc.

What are you specifically looking for in labour law? I must admit I
hate this as a subject, so didn't study from a proper commentary.
