Re: [AI] A useful addition to Talkback 12.1!
Folks, much awaited built-in OCR feature that I was talking about in Samsung talkback has now come through. Those having the Samsung phones do not need to do anything special on their end, just click the image that you receive on WhatsApp and touch the finger on the left bottom side or on the middle of the screen and all text will be read automatically. However, one major drawback is that one cannot take the advantage of navigating this text in the desired granularity mode. Thanks. Re: [AI] A useful addition to Talkback 12.1!
Namaskar! As already answered by Satguru, this is an alternate screen reader also known as Jieshuo+. it is developped by a Chinies man named Lee singlehandedly, and it surpasses in many things compared to Talkback. Forget all other features, its responsiveness is just awsome. It's not available on playstore. But he gives continuous updates regularly via dedicated telegram group, sometimes, the app is updated 3 to 4 times in a week. it has 2 version, 1. Commentary screen reader and 2. Commentary screen reader international version without chinies language support, small in size. Whether people like it or not, it's fact that things Google could not do in about 10 or 12 or more years of Android journey of Talkback, this person could achieve it in 10 or 12 months. It's paid version does have all these things like OCR, sceen recognition, Captcha solving capability and many more features. but it's basic or free version also does many things Talkback developpers could not even think anytime. I do have it in my phone and use its free version sometimes when I am sure talkback would not assist me in the task, and more than half of the times, Jieshuo+ does not disappoint. They have their telegram group specially dedicated to Jieshuo+ or Commentary screen reader, and people from various countries do great amount of voluntary work like making it developped in different different languages etc without any monitary thing involved is just amazing. This shows the commitment, this is just an example of strong will for the work undertaken with dedication. and "Chota Muh badi baat", giants like google does have lots of things to learn from these people undoubtedly. and I can't stop from laughing when I hear hollow statements from google pertaining to accessibility for all etc. It is personal choice afterall, whether to use it or not, we know it is Chinies software, no need to say more on that, but just it's Chinies app does not disqualify it from the praise it is worthy of. And now, it's part of Android Accessibility package. both Select to Speak and Talkback are parts of Android Accessibility suite. In google's words, "Android Accessibility Suite is a collection of accessibility apps that help you use your Android device eyes-free or with a switch device. Android Accessibility Suite includes: • Accessibility Menu: Use this large on-screen menu to lock your phone, control volume and brightness, take screenshots, and more. • Select to Speak: Select items on your screen and hear them read aloud. • Switch Access: Interact with your Android device using one or more switches or a keyboard instead of the touch screen - **newly added** Camera Switches to navigate with facial gestures. • TalkBack screen reader: Get spoken feedback, control your device with gestures, and type with the on-screen braille keyboard". I hope, confusion is clear now. Re: [AI] A useful addition to Talkback 12.1!
Namaskar Vikas and all! There seems confusion here. the feature you are talking is not talkback feature, rather it's Select to Speak one. Still, I am pasting here relevant part of Google help article on using Select to Speak for OCR purpose with it's URL: == Begins the portion of the Article https://support.google.com/accessibility/android/answer/7349565?hl=en Android Accessibility Help Use Select to Speak Some of these steps work only on Android 11.0 and up. You can select items on your screen and hear them read or described aloud with Select to Speak for Android. Step 1: Turn on Select to Speak 1.Open your device's Settings app . 2.Tap Accessibility, then tap Select to Speak. •Note: If you don't see Select to Speak, go to Google Play to download the latest version of Android Accessibility Suite, then try these steps again. 3.Turn on Select to Speak shortcut. 4.Optional: To change your shortcut, tap Select to Speak shortcut. Step 2: Use Select to Speak Hear descriptions of things on your screen 1.To start Select to Speak, use your Select to Speak shortcut: 2-finger swipe up (3-finger swipe if TalkBack is on), or tap the Accessibility button Accessibility. 2.Tap an item on your screen, like text or an image. 3.To hear multiple items, drag your finger across the screen. 4.To hear everything, tap Play Play. •Tip: When the player is open, use the buttons to pause or play, skip forward or backward, and to increase or decrease speed. Point your camera at pictures or text You can point your camera at pictures or text to hear them read or described aloud with OCR. This feature is available for Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Latin, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, and Turkish. 1.Tap the Google Camera app . 2.Point the camera at an image or text. 3.To start Select to Speak, use your Select to Speak shortcut: 2-finger swipe up (3-finger swipe if TalkBack is on), or tap the Accessibility button Accessibility. 4.Drag your finger across the screen, highlighting the text you want to read. Read in the background You can do other things while Select to Speak is reading in the background. For example, scroll down or switch to another app while Select to Speak reads. To let Select to Speak read in the background: 1.Open your device's Settings app . 2.Tap Accessibility, then tap Select to Speak. 3.Tap Settings. 4.At the top, turn on Read in background. Note: Select to Speak might not work with every mobile web browser. Thanks for that correction! That's true that it'll work with GBoard only and since I mentioned that this comes with TB 12.1, so I assumed that it'll be taken as a Talkback feature only. Cheers! Re: [AI] A useful addition to Talkback 12.1!
ability to perform OCR through built-in OCR without any third-party app??I first thought I've miss read it! I'm not aware of any such feature on my phone! There is one addition related to this though which is known as "Automatic captioning of unlabled images containing text" but I can't find it anywhere in the talkback settings! but then may be, it only pops up when there is an unlabled image with text. Hope to learn more on this. Best, Satguru. Hi, Many of us using non Samsung phones have been admiring the touch and double tap to type feature of the Samsung keyboard on their phones for years! That changes with TB 12.1! You can now activate this feature on almost any android phone running the mentioned version of the TB. Steps: Open the TB settings from the TB menu (Swipe up then right),navigate to Advanced settings and then to "Typing Preference". You'll find two options: Hold finger to select key, then double tap and second, Hold finger to select key, then lift. The second one is activated by default. I've tried it on my Oneplus 8 running Oxygen 11.0.9.9 based on Android 11 and it is working fine. I prefer the standard method though, but that's the personal choice Enjoy! Re: [AI] A useful addition to Talkback 12.1!
This setting is for Gboard only. Those loving double tap to type were using Blind Accessibility keyboard for years, sadly this great keyboard is not further updated by the developer. one thing is there, this is talkback specific feature, as soon as you change the screen reader for example start using commentary, this feature does not work, meaning your Gboard starts working with lift and type mode. And when back with talkback, your set feature comes again. And yes, Thanks for sharing of course.
