Re: more info about SEARCH_SHARE, AD_SHARE and EXTRACTED_FROM_WEBPAGE

2010-08-26 Thread xero
Hi Eric,

As to your answer 1, I suppose:
1. for "Search Share" of a keyword, an Ad with some URL served for
that keyword must exist.

2. If I have multiple URLs for multiple Ads, "Search Share" would be
calculated towards all those related URLs.

Is my understanding correct?

Hi Eric,

  Thanks for the quick reply!

According to your answers, I've the following further questions:
1. "Search share is how often your web page was shown as an organic
search results for the keyword idea."
Where does the referred "your web page" come from? Settings in Adwords
MCC or parameters to TargetingIdeaService?

2. I understand now that "ad share" and "search share" are historical
statistics, not estimates. Is it correct?

more info about SEARCH_SHARE, AD_SHARE and EXTRACTED_FROM_WEBPAGE

2010-08-24 Thread xero
Hi,

I did some tests against v200909 TargetingIdeaService in Adwords API
production environment recently, and found that SEARCH_SHARE, AD_SHARE
and EXTRACTED_FROM_WEBPAGE are all empty.

  Here're a few questions:
1. For AD_SHARE(Represents the percentage of the time that the
advertiser's ad (if applicable) was shown for queries associated with
the given keyword idea.):
Does that mean AD_SHARE is only available after I create an Ad
containing the keyword?
If yes, what will happen if I have 2 or more Ads containing the same
keywords?

2. For SEARCH_SHARE(Represents the percentage of the time that the
advertiser's webpage (if applicable) was shown for queries associated
with the given keyword idea):
Does that mean SEARCH_SHARE is only available after I create an Ad
containing the keyword?
If yes, what will happen if I have 2 or more Ads containing the same
keywords?

3. For EXTRACTED_FROM_WEBPAGE(Represents the webpage from which this
keyword idea was extracted (if applicable.)):
I've retrieved 800 keyword ideas for a seed keyword list. For each
keyword, EXTRACTED_FROM_WEBPAGE is requested. But none of them have
some real value for attribute EXTRACTED_FROM_WEBPAGE. Is that normal?

Re: problems encountered during development with Adwords API python lib

2010-08-02 Thread xero
Hi Eric,

Even a Google employee like you also have to trial & error for those
things? Wow, that's interesting. :D I didn't realize that.

Now I understand TargetingIdeaService is an exception. This is
important information. Otherwise there might be other questions
popping up. :P

I've checked & found out that the python lib has been upgraded to
12.0.0 on 7.29, and claims to have gzip support. I haven't tried yet,
but will do soon. I also sent a feature request for a keyword category
helper function like GetCategories(). This is an update for my
original post, in case any others are interested.

Thank you guys for the great work!

Re: problems encountered during development with Adwords API python lib

2010-07-31 Thread xero
Hi Eric,

It's exciting to know that gzip HTTP feature will be available in
the near future! I'm looking forward to it.

About Python lib, I didn't realize that I can submit feature request
myself. It's good to know and I will.

Thank you for opening a request for "returning valid category ids
from sandbox". I fully understand that it's not high priority. It
would be nice to have this feature since it makes behavior of sandbox
more consistent with production environment, but the absence of it
also won't be an action blocker.

  There're still something around.

1. Besides invalid character restrictions, does the keyword has other
restrctions, such as length limit?

2. With all due respect, I doubt that this behavior(fail the entire
call instead of returning N/A or NULL values) of estimateKeywordList()
in TrafficEstimatorService is consistent with the rest of Adwords API.

I did some test in sandbox, sending mal-formatted keywords to both
TrafficEstimatorService and TargetingIdeaService (requestType=STATS).
TrafficEstimatorService throws an exception, while
TargetingIdeaService still returns results.

IMHO, this is a major difference between v13 and v200909, and
definitely a great improvement. Aside from the fact that such pattern
suits web service environment well, actually it benefits both parties.
Users will get most of what they want in one shot, while Google's able
to charge customer without occupying too much resources (because the
user is destined to send the failed call again).

I'm not sure if in the future TrafficEstimatorService will have a
new version or not. If yes, I do wish it could follow the idea and
behavior of TargetingIdeaService now.

Hi Eric,
  Thanks for helping out!

  I've a few further ones:

1. It's a pity that TargetingIdeaService can't return >800 entries for
keywords only. But it's definitely great news that gzipped HTTP
transport support is under way. When will it be ready? Is there any
timetable for that?

2. Is it possible for DEV team to add support for returning valid
category ids?
It doesn't need to be "real" by all means, but some "dummy" random
number falling into the range of valid/possible keyword category ids.
In this way, users can still see some "dummy" results of keyword
category names from the sandbox data. Basically it's generating a
random number in one range instead of another.

3. It would be useful to add keyword category utility functions just
like what GetCategories() did for placement categories. And It's nice
to know keyword supports multiple categories.

4. Thanks for clarifying on keyword format. Besides invalid
characters, are there any other restrictions, e.g, keyword lengths?
Actually I'm thinking that returning all-0s or N/A results for those
keywords may be a better way for Adwords API implementation. It's
customer's fault to submit malformed keywords, and the customer can
prevent or remedy such mistake in many ways. Google doesn't need to be
responsible for that. Throwing an exception/failing the entire call is
too "heavy".

problems encountered during development with Adwords API python lib

2010-07-27 Thread xero
Hi,

I'm currently using Adwords API python lib. The following are
problems encountered in development. Can anyone help?

Q1. For getting ideas using "get":
Is it true that "totalNumEntries" returned is always <=800? It's not
clearly stated in API docs, but mentioned several times in other
articles on Internet.

Q2. If the answer to Q1 is yes, is there any way to retrieve >800
keyword ideas by using a list of keywords only(without providing URL)?

Q3. For getting ideas using "getBulkKeywordIdeas":
In API docs, it says "A limited, fixed set of attributes will be
returned." What are those "limited, fixed set of attributes" exactly?

Q4. How is the result of "getBulkKeywordIdeas" related to input URL?
If I use this URL to call "get" to retrieve keyword ideas, are the
results the same (at least for those 800 results)?

Q5. Is it possible to retrieve gzipped results of Targeting Idea
Service and Traffic Estimate Service? Does Adwords python lib support
gzipping/un-gzipping the requests & the responses?

Q6. I did some tests for keyword categories in sandbox, and found out
that none of the keyword category id returned from sandbox is in
category id range described here:
http://code.google.com/intl/en/apis/adwords/v2009/docs/codelists/keyword_categories.html.
Is it intentional behavior? Where can I get accurate category
description for a category id?

Q7. There's a function GetCategories() in Adwords python lib. What's
this category list used for? Is it related to keyword category id
returned by targeting idea service?

Q8. Does a keyword idea support multiple keyword categories?
In API docs, it says "KEYWORD_CATEGORY represents a category id for
a category within the category hierarchy for keyword ideas. Resulting
attribute is IntegerSetAttribute."
It seems keyword category is only an integer, but it uses integer
set as return type.

Q9. What's google's keyword format ('invalid character' problem)?
In one of my tests, when calling estimateKeywordList in traffic
estimator service, it returns:
"aw_api.Errors.RequestError: Code 14: This keyword text is not valid."
I've found out *?() can't occur in keyword text. Otherwise the web
service call will fail.
Why raising an exception instead of returning some specific values
for those malformed keywords, such as all-zeros or N/A flag, is beyond
me. It's not appealing that a list of keywords including only one
invalid keyword text will fail the entire call.
Web service calls are much more expensive than local calls. TCP
connection setup/teardown has overheads. Transferring list of keywords
takes time. Although ideally, we can fish out the malformed keyword by
calling web service for each keyword, such behavior will have much
more burden & overhead on both client and server sides. Personally I
don't think it's a good idea.
So what I'm doing now is to validate keyword format locally, with
the rules I learned from the tests. But it's far from the best way. Is
there any official description of google's keyword format, such as
invalid characters, invalid length etc?

  Thanks.

Re: a few questions about batch size and API unit/cost

2010-07-13 Thread xero
Hi Eric,

Thanks for the input! Helps a lot.

There's one question about 4) though.

I'm supposed to retrieve (lowerAvgPosition, lowerClicksPerDay,
lowerCpc, upperAvgPosition, upperClicksPerDay, upperCpc) for a
"keyword list".

It seems that there's no service in v200909 could cover that. I'll
have to resort back to estimateKeywordList() call in
TrafficEstimatorService in v13.

The reference guide on web says TrafficEstimatorService in v13 is
still available. So what I want to know is: the list size limit of
this "keyword list" when passing to estimateKeywordList().

  Thanks.

a few questions about batch size and API unit/cost

2010-07-12 Thread xero
Hi,

I have a few questions concerning Adwords API. Can anyone help?

1. About TargetingIdeaService input:
How many keywords in RelatedToKeywordSearchParameter are allowed in 1
call?
I've found some article on Internet saying:
if RequestType==IDEAS, the total number of keywords in 1 call is 100.
if RequestType==STATS, the total number of keywords in 1 call is 2500.
Is it correct?

2. About TargetingIdeaService output:
I've tested in Sandbox, and found out that when requesting for keyword
suggestions, I can retrieve data about those keyword suggestions at
the same time, such as TARGETED_MONTHLY_SEARCHES & COMPETITION. Is it
right?

3. About TargetingIdeaService output:
The meaning of attribute IDEA_TYPE(will return by default) is unclear
to me. While I'm making requests, the IdeaType is either KEYWORD or
PLACEMENT. Since I already know the IdeaType while I'm requesting, it
seems to me that the returned attribute IDEA_TYPE is not necessary. Is
that so?

4. About EstimateKeywordList() input:
Is this still available? And how many keywords are allowed in 1 call?

5. About TargetingIdeaService API units/cost.
On rate sheet, I found the API units consumed by TargetingIdeaService
is 0.1 per TargetingIdea and 5 per call. Does that mean the operation
cost is only related to number of returned results (if we don't take
per call cost into consideration)?

What I really want to know is:
If for same seed keyword and same number of return results (say,
identical paging object), I send the following 2 calls:
a) return attributes KEYWORD only.
b) return attributes KEYWORD, KEYWORD_CATEGORY, COMPETITION,
TARGETED_MONTHLY_SEARCHES.
are the costs for above 2 calls the same?

Thanks.
