Report for 'Debian Developer, non-uploading' applicant Lev Lamberov

2015-10-28 Thread Francesca Ciceri via nm
Hello,

I recommend to accept Lev Lamberov as a new Debian Developer, non-uploading.
The account name is dogsleg.

 * Applicant background

Hi guys,

I am Lev Lamberov (dogsleg), 31 years old, work as a docent (corresponds to
associate professor) of Philosophy department of Ural Federal University,
Yekaterinburg, Russia. But I'm also very interested in the Debian Project,
that's why I want to volunteer my time. I use Debian since etch release and
contribute to the Project from January 4th, 2013 [1]. Thanks to DebConf
diversity sponsorship I visited DebConf15 and enjoyed it.

I'm working mostly on Debian website translation into Russian. I've already
translated more than 3000 pages (given that some of consultants and users pages
were deleted from repository), you can compare archived website statistics page
[2] (December 2012) with the current statistics page [3]. At some point I've
got write access to website repository at Alioth (my Alioth login is
dogsleg-guest), at the present moment my statistics here consists of 1985
"adds" and 606 "commits".

Recently I started to contribute to Debian Documentation Project, I have write
access to ddp repository and already updated Russian translation of Release
Notes. Also I've translated into Russian (1) aptitude user's manual (which is
published), (2) Introduction to Debian Packaging (published), (3) Debian
Developer's Reference (not published yet, [4]).

I'd like to start working on packaging. But need to find more time for that.
Actually I have some experience with building Debian packages (for myself only,
not to distribute somewhere), but I still believe that I should start from big
preparation work (like reading manuals) and applying to mentors.d.n. So, it for
the future.

Also I contributed (also translations) a bit to GNU Project and FSF (like
translating subtitles for their short propoganda movie [5]), and FreedomBox
Foundation.

University-wise I teach several courses, two of which are (directly) related to
free software. The first is on philosophy of computer science and the second is
about ethical problems of informational technologies. And of course I use
Debian, talk about Debian and encourage my students to use free software.

2015-08-26 Thread Francesca Ciceri via nm
Hello,

I recommend to accept Andy Simpkins as a new Debian Developer, non-uploading.
The account name is rattusrattus.

 * Applicant background

I have been loosely involved with Debian for approximately 10 years, although
contributing little to packaging work.

For the past several years I have been taking an active part in the video team,
and have now volunteered to maintain the physical systems.

I regularly help Steve McIntyre on release days by testing and co-ordinating
(in IRC wiki) the testing of CD images.

Finally, I would like to become a non-uploading DD because I do very little
actual software work.

Report for 'Debian Developer, non-uploading' applicant Alexandre Delanoë

2015-05-11 Thread Francesca Ciceri via nm
Hello,

I recommend to accept Alexandre Delanoë as a new Debian Developer,
non-uploading.
The account name is anoe.

 * Applicant background

Dear Debian Developers,
My name is Alexandre Delanoë (anoe on IRC). I am a 35 years old
social data scientist living in Europa/France and current secretary
of Debian France Trusted Organization. Given my involvement in Debian
since 2004 and the responsibilities I have been carrying out in
Debian France since 2013, I hereby ask to join officially the Debian
Community as a non-uploading Debian Developer.

In 2004 year, I discovered Debian GNU/Linux during my PhD in
sociology thanks to a computer programmer I met in a research
department. I successfully installed Debian by myself, even if I was
not keen on computer programming initially. I have never changed the
distribution since this day. I played first with unstable and got a
sensitive heart attack after a litteral kernel panic. I came back
to stable to learn and I now use Debian testing as my main Desktop
OS. Convinced by the Social Contract (and DSFS) Guidelines I try to
practice it every day (According to vrms package on my desktop/working
station, I have only one (0.0%) non-free package).

Then I started as a non programming user and learned Debian
through its technical aspects. I have been really interested with its
organization. First, I worked during my PhD on the controversy of
Digital Right Managements issue. Then I also discovered the
soul of the mailing lists, your teams/organization and the strength
of the Social Contract to build a universal project. Every second,
Debian proves that with passion, the right job can be done.

After several years of learning with Debian, I have decided it was
time to give back to the Debian Project. First I analyzed the mailing
list archives in order to learn History of Debian. I started to focus
on the structures of the threads in the lists to produce a troll index
that can be useful to indicate the quality of a mailing-list [1]. But
my main involvement deals with Debian France [2].

[1] Mini DebConf Paris 2012 talk:
http://fr2012.mini.debconf.org/slides/socio-meter-for-debian.pdf
[2] http://france.debian.net (Current president Raphaël Hertzog)

Indeed, with Sylvestre Ledru, we organized the Mini DebConf 2013
in Paris. I managed to produce some Debian Goodies. I organized the
Debian France Logo Challenge with a mixed software/manual application
to use the Condorcet vote ; solution which is different than the
actual devotee (in Perl) or rubyvote (in ruby) since it is a solution
in Python, language I feel clear enough to understand what it counts.

As secretary of Debian France which is a Debian Trusted Organization
now, my main activities are:
- writing decisions report
- developing solutions for voting
- helping to activate (logo pool, membership key concept..)

Debian influenced my works and my life in a surprising and
unpredicted way, especially during the DebConf13. I was not able to be
with you for the DebConf14 but I really expect to be present for the
next one.

My projects are: 1) In Short term: keep on supporting Debian
France Trusted Organization 2) In middle term: keep on working on
Debian statistics, providing tools/packages for it (can help Debian
Teammetrics or Debian Press). 3) In the long term: developing (in
bash/python/haskell in continuation as today).

As last, by becoming a Debian Developer I will promote as much as
I can the values in the Social Contract that I already embrace:

To learn to write, one must learn to read and to learn reading one
must (be able to) open the book. It is the same for the code but
coding is to computing what writing is to reading. Debian is universal
in that it is a pedagogical project with universal values.

Thank you for your interest in my candidacy.

Alexandre Delanoë (anoe)

Francesca Ciceri

Advocacy for Thomas Vincent

2014-12-09 Thread Francesca Ciceri via nm
Hello,

I advocate Thomas Vincent to become Debian Developer, non-uploading.

The current status of Thomas Vincent is Debian Contributor.

Advocacy text:

Hi,

I#39;ve had the pleasure to work with Thomas for some years now: he is a
regular contributor for the www and publicity teams, working both as
editor and translator.

He is always helpful, polite, competent and a joy to work with. He#39;s been
also
part of the quot;April Foolsquot; cabal in 2013 when he helped in the
planning and
realization of various jokes [1, 2], using his stealth and creativity for the
LULZ.

Finally, he#39;s been a key contributor of the DebConf subtitle team in 2013,
beside working as part of the DebConf videoteam in the same year.

If anything, his contribution history says that he#39;s always up for the
challenge of a new and different job as well as being reliable and enthusiast.
He is, in my opinion, the kind of contributor that will help the Project in
maintaining its high standard and in bringing back the fun in our community at
the same time.

Cheers,
Francesca

Advocacy text:

I#39;ve known Laura in 2012 when she first started contributing to the spam

joined various teams - publicity, l10n spanish, www - and has contributed to
Debian regularly.
She is a charm to work with: her enthusiasm is contagious, her work scrupolous
and competent, she#39;s always polite and helpful. She has a unique gift to
transmit her enthusiasm to other people as well as communicate and promote very
well the projects she#39;s involved with.
I had the pleasure to meet her during Barcelona Miniconf in 2014, when we gave
a talk together about contributing to l10n in Debian and worked a bit about

Bug#760826: [Pkg-fonts-devel] Bug#760826: fonts-georgewilliams: The default system Monospace font is replaced by fonts-georgewilliams package

2014-09-10 Thread Francesca Ciceri
[upstream cc-ed]

Hi Frederic,

thanks for taking the time to report this bug.

I totally missed it when creating the package :/.

 Dear Maintainer,

After the update of ttf-georgewilliams package from 1.0-5 to 20031023-1, the
 new packet fonts-georgewilliams is installed.

This package contains a font called Monospace that replaces the default
 Monospace system font.

 /usr/share/fonts/truetype/fonts-georgewilliams/Monospace.ttf

This Monospace is used in consoles or Icedove when no font is specified.

After removing the package fonts-georgewilliams the font console is back to
 normal.

You should not use the name Monospace for your font, because it replaces the
 system font.

Ideally, this should be better fixed by upstream (and this is why I'm
cc-ing George Williams here).

@George: any chance to have the FontName, FullName and FamilyName of the
Monospace font [1] changed to something less confusing for system
settings? Like, maybe GWMono?

Thanks,
Francesca

Bug#760966: [Pkg-fonts-devel] Bug#760966: fonts-georgewilliams: the monospace font contains ligatures

2014-09-09 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Hi Adam,

thanks for taking the time to report this.

The monospace font has ligatures for some often occuring combinations,
including st, ff and fi, and these are crammed within 1 character
cell. This not only looks ugly, making text hard to read, but also breaks
alignment, displacing everything after such a ligature by 1 position.
A ligature of width 2 might be acceptable.

The basic rule for a fixed-pitch font is for every character to have width
of its wcwidth() (1, 2 for CJK, 0 for combining/specials). This font fails
 this requirement.

Ideally would be great to have this fixed upstream, this is why I'm
cc-ing George Williams (hopefully using the right mail address...).
As you can see here [1] this font hasn't been touched since 2002, so
it's a bit of a shot in the dark, but I'm trying anyway
:).

Also, this is quite nasty because fonts-georgewilliams installs itself as
the default system monospaced font on machines where it's installed.

This has been reported as #760826, which I'm going as well to forward
upstream as also in this case would be great to have the change made
directly there.

Cheers,
Francesca

Re: Advocacy for Tássia Camões Araújo

2014-08-31 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Hi,

I've worked with Tassia as a videoteam (and general DebConf) volunteer
during DC13 and Debian Women miniconf in Barcelona (2014): she trained
me for the videoteam and we did various shift together.
She's always been polite, helpful, competent and really a pleasure to work
with.
She's also very good in transmitting her knowledge to other people, and she's
always
ready to fill in for someone else if there are not enough volunteers and
very able in coordinating a team's work.

I wholeheartedly advocate her to be a non-uploading DD and I'm very
happy that someone who's been part of the project for many years so far,
will be now - also formally - a Debian Member.

Cheers,
Francesca

Hi Felipe,

sorry for the extremely late reply, Real Life™ sidetracked me a bit :).

Sadly, in the meanwhile, my hard disk died. Not the best way to solve
the audio problem, but still... in the new installation audio works as
expected.

Feel free to close this bug if you think it's the case.

Thanks anyway for all your help and time and your work in Debian!

Bug#709500: Documentation is non free

2014-08-16 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Hi,

I've taken a look at this bug as part of a BSP.

The documentation of your package is non free under gfdl with invariants
 sections.

 Particularly:
src/hackerlab/libhackerlab/libhackerlab.doc
src/tla/libarch/libarch.doc
src/build-tools/standards/standards.doc

While src/tla/libarch/libarch.doc is probably a false positive (as the
invariant sections there are only the licenses, which are already to be
considered invariant for their nature...), the other two are
problematic.

The removal of the package doesn't seem an option as, while being
orphaned and RC buggy, is still used by many users [1].

The repackage seems a good option, though, and in order to do it the
following bits need to be nuked from the .tar.gz:

/src/tla/libhackerlab
/src/build-tools/standards

I tried to do it, but I'm not much experienced in packaging, and it only
lead to failure in building the binaries. So I'm letting this to someone more
experienced.

Or, in alternative, we could simply migrate it to non-free.

Cheers,
Francesca

This is a bit confusing for me too ;). Perhaps the permission denied

Really no idea :) It's not clear to me, either, even if I'm trying to
isolate all the possible scenarios.
I'm sorry I cannot give more clear information: I'm afraid I really
don't understand what is suppose to happen nor what it's actually
happening.

What happens if you use aplay -D hw:1,0 -c 2 wavfile when pulseaudio
is not working? Do you get sound? Use aplay -l to find out a suitable
number to put after the hw: part, and try 1 and 2 for the -c option.

With aplay I get audio, even if pulseaudio is not working.

I used plughw: though, because hw: gave me an error (aplay:
set_params:1239: Channels count non available).

Also, when pulseaudio is not working, does pavucontrol show you
 anyhing in the output devices?

Yes, pavucontrol shows the bar moving in the output device and
playback tabs.

Many thanks for your help,

This.
We totally need this.

I really feel that burnout is huge risk to be taken in account when
volunteering with a community project and if we can minimize that risk,
then we'll have a healthier community.

This idea has been in my mind for a while, and I know from experience
that when you realize that volunteering in some teams is not a life
sentence, then you feel again enthusiasm toward Debian work.
It's pretty difficult, but taking the time to rethink your involvement
can be vital. Not only for the individual, but also for the teams
involved.

So to be clear: are you tired of doing Debian work? Do you feel it's
your responsibility and not fun at all, like in the beginning?
Then:

1. remember that it's not a life sentence
2. there will be someone else to carry on your work (take that,
Galadriel!¹)
3. look around for other team you'd like to work on in Debian
4. well, if you don't find anything, there are other projects beside
Debian that could use a hand

Bug#712209: pulseaudio: getting no audio

2014-05-17 Thread Francesca Ciceri

Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I'm experiencing this as well, since yesterday.
I was able to get audio only following the suggestion in Message 10, ie doing a
'alsactl init' as root. And the effect is lost on reboot/shutdown.

root@malatesta:/home/madamezou# alsactl init
Found hardware: HDA-Intel ATI R6xx HDMI
HDA:1002aa01,00aa0100,00100200 0x17aa 0x5104
Hardware is initialized using a generic method

Here's the requested information, let me know if you need more.

Ciao a tutti,

 Hello Francesca,

You need to send such mails to bug-submit...@bugs.debian.org if you
want to reach the original bug submitter.

Yeah, I know... I noticed the moment I sent the mail.
I've already sent the same mail to the submitter as well, using the
address he reported the bug with, so to avoid a double message in the
BR.

But thanks for heads up!

Cheers,

Bug#568857: using gWaterfall to show the problem

2014-05-16 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Version: 5.3.0-2

Hi,

I was able to reproduce it on a terminal (Sakura) with Awesome WM.
It happened only with Linux Libertine Mono O (both regular and italic,
but not bold nor italic bold) and Linux Libertine O (only regular) and
only when at 14pt.

It has apparently been reported also upstream:
http://sourceforge.net/p/linuxlibertine/bugs/237/

I'll add there a link to this bug report, as they can find the testing
done here useful, and tag this bug as upstream.

Cheers,

Mi sono preso la libertà di buttare giù qualche riga di comunicato
stampa, attingendo a piene mani dal cs di ubuntu-it dell'anno scorso.
 Il cs è qui:

 http://titanpad.com/prRJoBU0ER

È sicuramente da integrare, ma stamattina sono decisamente poco
 ispirato. Confido nel vostro aiuto.

Gli sto dando un'occhiata: in linea di massima mi sembra ok, mi sto
limitando a togliere qualche ripetizione e aggiungere qualche Debian qua
e là ;).

Ciao,

[RFR] liveusb-creator (Tor Project)

2014-05-01 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Ciao

lasciando tutto intonso.

Altrimenti passo a setacciare
archivi mail.

Ciao,
Francesca

[RFR] liveusb-creator (Tails)

2014-05-01 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Ciao

lasciando tutto intonso.
*Odio transifex*.

[RFR] BridgeDB (Tor Project)

2014-04-24 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Ciao a tutt@,

Grazie in anticipo,
Francesca

Bug#648779: ttf-ecolier-court: Wrong upstream homepage.

2014-04-21 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Hi,

after a bit of googling I came to this page:

http://douteau.ecolier.perso.sfr.fr/

My french is almost non-existant, but seems to me that this is the new
(?) homepage for this font.
Christian, can you confirm this? Or have you any news from upstream
about his webpage?

Cheers,

Bug#727167: fonts-junicode: debian/copyright may be out of date

2014-03-26 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Package: fonts-junicode
Tags: patch

Hi,

Indeed, according to upstream webpage [1] the font is released under a
Open Font License. I wasn't able, though to find the License itself - or
any mention of it - in the upstream tarball.
I also tried my luck with the Debian package repository, but beside the
copyright file, there is no indication of upstream choice of license.

As among the conditions of SIL Open Font License is to ship the license
itself with the font, I think this is a bug that should be (reported
and) fixed upstream.

In any case, I'm adding a patch for the debian/copyright file, in order
to fix at least the wrong license problem.

Cheers,
Francesca

Bug#734626: fonts-opendin: Typo in Menu Name of Font (Eng*sh*rift instead of Engschrift)

2014-03-25 Thread Francesca Ciceri
[cc-ing Paulo Silva, who's upstream for this font, because the problem
seems to originate from the upstream source]

Hi Ralph,

you're correct about the typo. The problem, though, is that the typo in
the font name appears to come from the upstream source.
You can verify it going to the homepage of the project [1],
downloading the .zip and unzipping it:

madamezou@malatesta:~/bugs$ unzip 107153-OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift.zip
Archive: 107153-OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift.zip
creating: OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift/
inflating: OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift/About.txt
inflating: OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift/OFL.txt
inflating: OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift/OpenDinSchriftenEngshrift.otf
inflating: OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift/OpenDinSchriftenEngshrift.sfd
inflating: OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift/OpenDinSchriftenEngshrift.svg
inflating: OpenDinSchriftenEngschrift/OpenDinSchriftenEngshrift.ttf

So: the archive and the directory names are correct, the filenames
and the metadata of the font contain the typo.
While it's certainly possible to fix it in the Debian package, maybe
it's even better if upstream fixes it directly in the source?

Cheers,
Francesca

*excuse me*?

I'm a non technical contributor and I do not see a direct logical link

And I feel insulted.
Also, thanks for reinforcing the stereotype of non technical

We have several officials ways of publicizing stuff in Debian:

stuff that should be announce somewhere else instead of mixed with the
  DPL activity.

That said, the coordination between the above sources doesn't work very
well, all of them have a lot of room for improvement (and I say that
being closely involved in one of them) and I have seen Debian contributors
lost about what to do when they want to announce something, sometimes
being played as a ping pong ball between teams.
I would love to know your vision about how publicizing Debian should work
and if you think you can do something as DPL to improve the current
  situation.

The big question here is: does it hurt?

Yes, it does.
As a former press officer, editor of DPN and bits.d.o, I've had the
privilege to work on all of the above publicity sources.
I've left for a (little?) hiatus some months ago, so maybe the situation
is changed now and if so I hope the people from those teams will correct
me.

I think that it's better to have
something published twice, rather than not published at all. Of course,
it would be better if we used all our official ways of publicizing stuff
in a perfectly coherent and organized way,

Lack of coordination among the different sources: that's a first
problem, indeed.
Debian-publicity (the ML) should act as a node for all the publicity/promoting
people in Debian, but it doesn't.
This means that sometimes a piece of news is published twice on two
different media (and I agree this is not all bad)
and sometimes it's ignored by all of them (and, yes, as you may guess *this* is
extremely bad).
I'd like to add also that the existence of different media is not
about redundancy, but about choosing the most appropriate medium for
each kind of news (which should be the responsibility of an editorial
team, and not done on a whim).
You cannot publish an entire interview on DPN, nor announce a big
donation via identi.ca, nor link a blogpost on a press release.

but I'm not sure that the
current situation is so bad at the moment: our official communication
mediums work pretty well, and are quite complementary.

No. I'm sorry to be a bit harsh, but it doesn't work well.
In some cases, doesn't work at all.
Do you know that since the transition status.net → pump.io, the
automatic publishing of rss feeds for news and planet on identi.ca is
broken?
Laura Arjona did a fantastic analysis of the situation [1] many months
ago and asked for help on fixing it: she is not a coder, and she cannot package
Spigot [2], which would solve our issue.
And that's only an example. Try confronting the number of press releases
per year before 2012 (included) and those in the last two years.
Last hear, we didn't have even an announcement for the election of the
DPL.

I'm saying this not to be overly critic with the relevant teams/groups:
they are doing a fantastic job in extremely difficult situation.
What I find extremely worrying is that these
sources (press, identi.ca, dpn, bits) are all basically a one (wo)man team:
sooner of later if all the weight is on the same shoulder, the person
behind it will burn out.
For teams like DPN and bits, especially, we don't have a fallback. Press
is another problematic one, where people are or busy with many other
responsibilities, or simply MIA.
It doesn't help that such teams receive very little feedback or
appreciation, but I guess that's not a publicity-only problem.
We've tried to recruit new blood, so to speak: but Debian as a whole is
still very bad at recruiting people with non-coding/packaging skills and
publicity is one of the team suffering for this. (Even though I think
that the Debian Desktop team got it worse).

 So I'm not sure
that more organization here is worth the effort. Do you have specific
issues in mind that you think should be solved?

Lack of vision.
That's the one to top all of this.
There is no plan.
There has not been - at least in the last 4 years - any kind of
collective debate on what to do about publicity in Debian, what kind of
style and editorial choices do, how to organize the work and make it
more efficient. Or who we want to reach, really, with our news.
(And many other things, but this could easily become a rant, so I'll
stop now ;)).

I dearly love publicity in Debian: it is where I started to contribute,
I hold in high esteem many of the people working there, and I have many
idea and enthusiasm for it.
But I learnt my lesson and I'm not willing to fix any of these problems
if there aren't at least 3-5 people willing to working on them as well.
Because otherwise it wouldn't be sustainable on long term.

Thanks Ana for asking this question, and

A me sembra tutto ok, ho solo un paio di dubbi abbastanza generali.
Il primo riguarda le virgolette. Ho notato
che nella traduzione usi virgolette caporali al posto di quelle alte.
Vedo che qui [1] lascia la scelta al traduttore: c'è un consenso su
quali usare a livello di team Debian o no?

L'altro dubbio è l'uso di sistema init: a me personalmente sistema di
init suona meglio (alla fin fine init sta per inizializzazione), ma
ovviamente dipende da come traducete di solito.

Ciao,

templates.pot files mangled if downloaded via chromium

2014-02-22 Thread Francesca Ciceri
[debian-www list added in CC, as I'm not sure if it's a problem of the
i18n server, of the website or of the browser involved]

Hi all!

Downloading a template file from this page [1] with chromium, results in
a somehow mangled file. The same thing happens using firefox, while the
file can be correctly downloaded using wget.

How to reproduce:

1. with chromium (Version 32.0.1700.123 Debian jessie/sid(248368))
open https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po-debconf/pot

2. click on one of the template.pot link (for instance, the first one:
bind9)

3. extract the downloaded file ('gunzip -d
bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz')

The resultant file will be a binary file:

madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ file -i bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot
bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot: application/gzip; charset=binary
madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ file -n bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot
bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot: gzip compressed data, was
templates.pot, last modified: Tue Oct 22 21:50:47 2013, max compression, from
Unix

If you try the same procedure with wget, instead:

1. wget wget
http://i18n.debian.org/material/po/unstable/main/b/bind9/debian/po/bind9_1%3a9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz

2. madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ gunzip
'bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz'

3. madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ file -i
'bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot'
bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot: text/x-po; charset=us-ascii
madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ file -n
'bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot'
bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot: GNU gettext message catalogue,
ASCII text

As you can notice, the filename resulting from the download is slightly
different - there's a : in the wget'd version that substitute a - in
the chromium'd one).

And the md5sum confirms it:

madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ md5sum bind9_1*
042a5a827ac27caa9b844e6a06940aec bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz
ea556135b7c7f432fda6f249932828bc bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz

This *don't* happens with the po.gz files in [2].
So, not sure who to report it, as I don't know if it's a browser
problem, a server problem or a website problem. Any idea?

Cheers,
Francesca

yubico-pam.it.po: not-uptodate-po-file error

2014-02-22 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Hi all,

I was updating the italian translation for yubico-pam po-debconf file
when I noticed that it is listed in the errors page [1]
as not-uptodate-po-file.

I've read the explanation for this error here [2], but I'm not sure what
I have to do now.

Write a bug report to the maintainer?

Generate the right file from the source package (using
'debconf-updatepo') and submit the translation as usual?

Or just retrieve the file from the website?

Anyone have experience with this or can please point me in the right
direction? :)

Thanks,
Francesca

3. extract the downloaded file ('gunzip -d
bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz')

The resultant file will be a binary file:

madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ file -i bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot
bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot: application/gzip; charset=binary

templates.pot, last modified: Tue Oct 22 21:50:47 2013, max compression, from
Unix

If you try the same procedure with wget, instead:

1. wget wget
http://i18n.debian.org/material/po/unstable/main/b/bind9/debian/po/bind9_1%3a9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz

2. madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ gunzip
'bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz'

3. madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ file -i
'bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot'
bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot: text/x-po; charset=us-ascii
madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ file -n
'bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot'
bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot: GNU gettext message catalogue,
ASCII text

As you can notice, the filename resulting from the download is slightly
different - there's a : in the wget'd version that substitute a - in
the chromium'd one).

And the md5sum confirms it:

madamezou@malatesta:~/Downloads$ md5sum bind9_1*
042a5a827ac27caa9b844e6a06940aec bind9_1-9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz
ea556135b7c7f432fda6f249932828bc bind9_1:9.9.3.dfsg.P2-4_templates.pot.gz

This *don't* happens with the po.gz files in [2].
So, not sure who to report it, as I don't know if it's a browser
problem, a server problem or a website problem. Any idea?

Cheers,
Francesca

Hello,

I've found the same problem as well: blank main window just after the

it, I'm using awesome as window manager - if that is of any help).

If I switch to openjdk-6 with update-alternatives, everything's fine.

Let me know if you need more info.

Subtitles for DC13 talks: git repo and workflow

2013-08-27 Thread Francesca Ciceri
TL;DR: We're creating English subtitles for DC13 talks! Do you want to
help us? Do you want to translate them in your language? Check here [1] how
to do it!

Hi all,

after a bit of trial and error in the workflow, we decide to set up a
git repo [2] for the English subtitles (and their translations) for DC13
talks.
This will hopefully make it easier for reviewers and translators to work
on the subtitles, and will probably allow people (mostly Holger) who can
upload them on the server to retrieve them easily.

@Holger: as comments aren't allowed in the srt files, I'm using the
status.txt file in the debconfsubs repo to track the status of the
subtitles. If you prefer I can ping you when there are at least a couple
of them ready to be uploaded.

Everything is documented on the wikipage [1].
Any suggestion is welcome, and help is *more* than welcome :).

Cheers,
Francesca

speak about personal experiences in other fields, we thought people
would have feel more comfortable without cameras.
Both Tiago (from Talk team) and Tassia (from Video Team) were really
helpful with that (thanks!), considering that I asked them about it just
a couple of hours before the session.

On a related note: we should probably also provide an area in the audience
which shall not be filmed, not all attendees are comfortable with that.

I'd really like that.

[Debconf-discuss] English subtitles for DebConf13 talks

2013-08-16 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Hi all,

this year I'll try again to provide english subtitles for some of
DebConf13 talks. I'll probably follow the workflow explained in this
wiki page [1].
It's not difficult, even for a non native-speaker, but it's a bit
time consuming: this is way I won't be able to do it for all the talks,
but feel free to join me!

You don't have to be at DebConf to do it, as some video recordings are
already available online here [2].
And if you prefer, there's always the possibility to do it via a web
based interface [3].
If you are going to do it, please claim here [4] the video you want to work on,
so to avoid double work.

Cheers,
Francesca

ps: any suggestion from the videoteam people on how to improve the
workflow is really welcome! :)

thanks to all the speakers.
The session was really a success, and it definitely has been (at least to

ps: I have been asked if it's possible to have an anonymized summary of
the session. @ all speakers: is it ok for you? I haven't taken notes but
I think I'll be able to remember the main points of each talk.

Translation of the release announcement.

2013-05-05 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Hi all,

first of all let me thank you (both the pt_BR and the pt_PT component of
the team) for having answered to my call for translations. I really
appreciate your work, even more as my call was almost a last minute
one.

Sadly, I couldn't use both the translations: the structure of the
website is not currently ready to accept and display both pt_BR and
pt_PT files.
AFAICT, there was some talking about prepare the website for this
scenario, but the plan got apparently stuck.

So, this mail is to apologise to the pt_PT translators, because I
couldn't make use of their work: when I realized that I had to choose -
fast - one of the two translations, I've decided to use the only one
(pt_BR) which contained the Status [ready] line in the file itself.

If there's anything that I can do to help you fix this situation, let me
know, and I'll gladly help!

Cheers,
Francesca

Hi,

this mail is only to thank all the people who helped in the
coverage of the release: from the editors of the announcement;
to our fantastic native speaker reviewers; to the translators,
who did a great job with a very short notice.

A special mention for Paul Wise who took care of the
live coverage on identi.ca (and I had already given up on that,
as there weren't enough volunteers from the press team to do
it) and all the people hanging in the #debian-publicity IRC channel
during that long long Saturday and helped with suggestions and
minor tasks.

Keep up the good work!

Debian 7.0 Wheezy released

2013-05-04 Thread Francesca Ciceri

The Debian Projecthttp://www.debian.org/
Debian 7.0 Wheezy releasedpr...@debian.org
May 4th, 2013 http://www.debian.org/News/2013/20130504

After many months of constant development, the Debian project is proud
to present its new stable version 7.0 (code name Wheezy).
This new version of Debian includes various interesting features such as
multiarch support [1], several specific tools to deploy private
clouds [2], an improved installer, and a complete set of multimedia
codecs and front-ends which remove the need for third-party
repositories.

1: http://www.debian.org/News/2011/20110726b
2: http://www.debian.org/News/2012/20120425

Multiarch support, one of the main release goals for Wheezy, will
allow Debian users to install packages from multiple architectures on
the same machine. This means that you can now, for the first time,
install both 32- and 64-bit software on the same machine and have all
the relevant dependencies correctly resolved, automatically.

The installation process has been greatly improved: Debian can now be
installed using software speech, above all by visually impaired people
who do not use a Braille device. Thanks to the combined efforts of a
huge number of translators, the installation system is available in 73
languages, and more than a dozen of them are available for speech
synthesis too.
In addition, for the first time, Debian supports installation and
booting using UEFI for new 64-bit PCs (amd64), although there is no
support for Secure Boot yet.

This release includes numerous updated software packages, such as:

  * Apache 2.2.22
  * Asterisk 1.8.13.1
  * GIMP 2.8.2
  * an updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 3.4
  * GNU Compiler Collection 4.7.2
  * Icedove 10 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Thunderbird)
  * Iceweasel 10 (an unbranded version of Mozilla Firefox)
  * KDE Plasma Workspaces and KDE Applications 4.8.4
  * kFreeBSD kernel 8.3 and 9.0
  * LibreOffice 3.5.4
  * Linux 3.2
  * MySQL 5.5.30
  * Nagios 3.4.1
  * OpenJDK 6b27 and 7u3
  * Perl 5.14.2
  * PHP 5.4.4
  * PostgreSQL 9.1
  * Python 2.7.3 and 3.2.3
  * Samba 3.6.6
  * Tomcat 6.0.35 and 7.0.28
  * Xen Hypervisor 4.1.4
  * the Xfce 4.8 desktop environment
  * X.Org 7.7
  * more than 36,000 other ready-to-use software packages, built from nearly
17,500 source packages.

With this broad selection of packages, Debian once again stays true to
its goal of being the universal operating system. It is suitable for
many different use cases: from desktop systems to netbooks; from
development servers to cluster systems; and for database, web, or
storage servers. At the same time, additional quality assurance efforts
like automatic installation and upgrade tests for all packages in
Debian's archive ensure that Wheezy fulfills the high expectations
that users have of a stable Debian release. It is rock solid and
rigorously tested.

You can install Debian on computers ranging from handheld systems to
supercomputers, and on nearly everything in between. A total of nine
architectures are supported: 32-bit PC / Intel IA-32 (i386), 64-bit PC /
Intel EM64T / x86-64 (amd64), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Sun/Oracle
SPARC (sparc), MIPS (mips (big-endian) and mipsel (little-endian)),
Intel Itanium (ia64), IBM S/390 (31-bit s390 and 64-bit s390x), and ARM
EABI (armel for older hardware and armhf for newer hardware using
hardware floating-point).

Want to give it a try?
If you want to simply try it without having to install it, you can use a
special image, known as a live image, available for CDs, USB sticks, and
netboot setups. Initially, these images are provided for the amd64 and
i386 architectures only. It is also possible to use these live images to
install Debian. More information is available from the Debian Live
homepage [3].

3: http://live.debian.net/

If, instead, you want to directly install it, you can choose among
various installation media, such as Blu-ray Discs, DVDs, CDs, and USB
sticks, or from the network. Several desktop environments — GNOME, KDE
Plasma Desktop and Applications, Xfce, and LXDE — may be installed
through CD images; the desired one may be chosen from the boot menus of
the CDs/DVDs. In addition, multi-architecture CDs and DVDs are available
which support installation of multiple architectures from a single disc.
Or you can always create bootable USB installation media (see the
Installation Guide [4] for more details).

4: http://www.debian.org/releases/wheezy/installmanual

The installation images may be downloaded right now via bittorrent [5]
(the recommended method), jigdo [6], or HTTP [7]; see Debian on CDs [8]
for further information. Wheezy will soon be available on physical DVD,
CD-ROM, and Blu-ray Discs from numerous vendors [9], too.

2013-05-04 Thread Francesca Ciceri
Ciao gente!

aver fatto troppi danni.

Grazie in anticipo, e grazie anche a Beatrice, Gabriele e Daniele che
stanno lavorando meravigliosamente (e con zero preavviso) sulle Release
Notes.

Wheezy release announcement. Please review and translate.

2013-05-02 Thread Francesca Ciceri
[please reply on -publicity list]

Hi all,

with the help of people from the Release Team, we just finalised the
announcement for the release of Wheezy.

There's only one part missing, and it's the one dedicated to Debian
Blends: Paul has already mailed them asking for input and we are
waiting for their reply.
But the rest is done, so you can start reviewing and translating!

Here's the draft:
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/publicity/announcements/en/2013/20130504.wml?view=markup

The translations should be added to the publicity repository; here's all
the relevant informations on how to do it:
http://wiki.debian.org/News/HowToTranslate

We expect to be done with the release (and the sending of the announcement)
on Saturday, the 4th. There's currently no good estimate of when exactly
the announcement will be sent out.

I can add the translated announcements to the website myself for you:
just remember to mark the status of the file adding a line with a
[translating|reviewing|ready] tag (so that I'll know when it's ready).
If there's also a localized -user or -news mailing list for your
language, please get in contact with the coordinator of your l10n team
to see that (s)he have the permission to send the translated
announcement to the mailing list.

Cheers,
Francesca

A Bytemark donation boosts reliability of Debian's core infrastructure

2013-04-04 Thread Francesca Ciceri

The Debian Projecthttp://www.debian.org/
A Bytemark donation boosts reliability of Debian's core infrastructure
pr...@debian.org
April 4th, 2013 http://www.debian.org/News/2013/20130404

Earlier this week, Debian started deploying machines for its core
infrastructure services which will be hosted in a new data centre in
York, UK. The hardware, generously donated and hosted by Bytemark
Hosting [1], consists of a fully-populated HP BladeSystem (containing 16
server blades) and several HP Modular Storage Arrays (providing a total
of 57 TB).

1: http://bytemark.co.uk

Bytemark's servers have relied on Debian since the day we started the
company in 2002, and it was always an embarassingly good deal. We've
tried to repay it through sponsorship of the annual DebConf gatherings,
and through publication of Symbiosis (our own packages to make Debian
easier for hosting tasks), explained Matthew Bloch, co-founder of
Bytemark. While we can't match the unpaid efforts of the project's
thousand of volunteers, we're at least happy to be providing such a
substantial part of Debian's infrastructure. Debian's success will
continue to spur Bytemark's.

This significant hardware and hosting donation will allow the Debian
Systems Administration (DSA) team [2] to distribute Debian's core
services across a greater number of geographically diverse locations,
and improve, in particular, the fault-tolerance and availability of end-
user facing services, said Luca Filipozzi (DSA team member).
Additionally, the storage component of this donation will dramatically
reduce the storage challenges that Debian currently faces. Our plan is
to move several storage-intensive services to Bytemark, he continued.
It is only through donations of time, goods and funds that the 100%
volunteer Debian Project is able to operate the critical infrastructure
necessary to support its work. Further details of which services will
be moved to this new equipment will be provided soon on the debian-
infrastructure-announce mailing list [3].

About Bytemark

Bytemark [4] has been the UK's nerd hosting outfit of choice since
2002. It has a history of building its own technology including BigV, a
new command-line cloud hosting platform, and Symbiosis, a set of
packages to make hosting on Debian even easier. The company powers tens
of thousands of domains around the world, and sponsors hosting for
hundreds of important free software projects including Debian,
LibreOffice and XBMC.

community project. Since then the project has grown to be one of the
largest and most influential open source projects. Thousands of
volunteers from all over the world work together to create and maintain
Debian software. Available in 70 languages, and supporting a huge range
of computer types, Debian calls itself the universal operating system.

Bits from the Release Team
--

Julien Cristau sent an update on Release Team activities [1], announcing
the start of the final stage of the freeze. This basically means that
from now on, there will be an even stricter policy on the changes that
can be uploaded (only fixes for release critical bugs will be accepted)
and that the Release Team will start to apply a specific usertag
(wheezy-will-remove [2]) to mark packages that will be removed from the
upcoming stable release if their RC bugs aren't fixed. In addition,
Julien gave a reminder that help is needed to finalise the Release
Notes: all users and contributors are invited to check the work in
progress [3] and help with the current issues [4].

Bits from the DSA team
--

Martin Zobel-Helas sent some bits from the Debian Systems Administration
team (DSA) [5] in which he reported on the recent activities of the
team. In recent months, they have focused on the virtualisation of a
number of physical machines, creating some ganeti clusters to manage the
various virtual machines. In addition to that, the team has begun a
rewrite of its account management code base using the Django framework.
The mail ends with the thanks of the DSA team to all the donors and
hosting partners (and especially Eaton [6] and Brainfood [7]) as well as
the ganeti package maintainers, Iustin Pop and Guido Trotter.

DebConf13 matching fund
---

Didier Raboud announced matching funding for donations to DebConf13 [8].
As part of the DebConf13 fundraising effort, a generous sponsor,
Brandorr Group [9], has proposed to match USD donations to DebConf13
until 30 April explained Didier. Through this mechanism, for each
dollar donated by an individual to DebConf13, Brandorr Group will donate
another dollar. Individual donations will be matched only up to 100 USD
each; only donations in USD will be matched, and Brandorr Group will
match the donated funds up to a maximum total of 5,000 USD.
This initiative will continue until Tuesday 30 April; spread the word!
For further details, you can check the donations webpage [10].

New Maintainer process
--

Enrico Zini blogged about the gender imbalance in the New Maintainer
process [11]. Enrico noted that we still have very few women
applicants [12], despite previous efforts to encourage them to apply,
including by the Debian Women [13] project. He therefore proposed that
we adopt an affirmative action approach, and only allow one male
candidate to apply for every female one. Since the goal is to have an
equal gender perception in Debian, we can just decide to only approve
one obviously-male-named DD for every obviously-female-named one, said
Enrico. That's right: no new obviously-male-named DD unless an
obviously-female-named DD has just been approved.

Editorial changes to the constitution
-

Francesca Ciceri proposed a constitutional amendment about changing our
election system [14]. She pointed out the large amount of time wasted in
election discussions each year, and the problems in tricking other
project members into running. The proposed amendment would cancel the
current election process, and instead make
