Based on reimplementing SdrPageView::AreFormControlsUsed(), i now do the exceptional painting if FormControls or TextEditMode, else the fast, fully-buffered paint is used. This has low risk, because the risky things are done exactly like since the m194, only the obvious get the full buffering. Added, creating new install sets. Anyways, the measure (compare Win-Vdev with VDev-VDev once, write flag in registry, use neyt time, ...) did not wor reliable. We tested all available timing methods in OOo, most failed and gave the same dirung measurements of the ATI driver. In the meantime THB found other graphics hardware (NVidia) to have the same problem, so it seems not to be restricted to ATI, but it's more like Window-VDev is not predictable, so not use it. I am going to switch off OverlayBuffer for SC,SW for 2.2 by default now. It has to do with ATI graphic drivers. There, VirtualDevice creation/destruction is extremely slower than on other drivers. The new buffering uses VirtualDevices to do it's work, normally You cannot notice repaint differences and Overlay is much faster. Interestingly, it happens with ATI drivers under Windoes and Linux, looks as if they have the same basic driver core there. I am about to identify the cases where VirtualDevices are constructed/destroyed and changing it to reuse them (what was anyways intended, but non-ATI drivers do not emerge a problem, they are simply fast in thoses cases). So, the good is: To run with ATI, creation/destruction needs to be avoided and these glitches will be changed. To see that it's not by priciple extremely slower with buffering, please check on a non-ATI system if You have the possibility to do so. Hopefully, this is the only problem with the ATI drivers here... - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. If form controls are used, the repaint needs to work different. The prerendered content is copied to the screen, the form controls are painted, and the the overlay (also directly to the screen). Tn that case, the prerender buffer also gets deleted. AW: Created CWS aw042 for this task, preparing... AW: This is no solution for SC or SW yet, but we wlii see, maybe there is also an error sleeping there. Reassigning to Armin, Cc'ing Niklas and Christian. In Calc, Name Box and Input Line window, column and row headers, marked area, sheet tabs and status line are affected. Note that the upper left rectangle where col/row headers meet is not affected, nor are bottom and right scroll bar. On my otherwise quite fast system the repaint when switching the Calc application window to front or maximizing from minimized takes, depending on the window size, between half a second and more than one second. Every cell input takes the same amount of time, undoing a series of input is a pain. Each PgDn/PgUp takes its time to repaint row headers, scrolling is extremely unsmooth. In Impress, the Slides and Tasks panes, the scroll bars of the main pane and the status bar are affected the same. The same in Draw. Changes from me definitely came in with aw024, but are system independent on DrawingLayer base. To check if it has something to do with it, please compare a m193 (or earlier) with an m194 version (or later) where aw024 was integrated. The new Overlay feature is activated in all Applications, including SW. It requires extra work in repainting the DrawingLayer-using areas (in SC the cell area without line/column headers and without scrollbars, in SW the whole page area, in Draw/Impress the whole page). You may test with switching it off in the settings (bool flag OverlayBuffer) The new buffered paint is activated in Draw/Impress only, to switch off for test change the bool flag PaintBuffer in the settings. Since it is also used in SW and not reported there, i am not sure if it may have to do with it or not. Another point is that it's activated on all systems using VCL, so maybe there is a bottleneck in something used less intensively before? This gives a concrete hint. But i think switching off the Overlay feature is not a good alternative, it will involve blinking/flickering. What happens with overlay activated is that the parts (Regions) which get repainted are painted to the destination (the Window in this case) and then rescued to the overlay buffer. After that, the Overlays (drag frames, cursor and selection in SC, etc...) get painted. When changing Overlays, the window display is restored from the OverlayBuffer and Overlays get repained - Overlay change without DrawingLayer/Application repaint, e.g. cursor traveling in SC. Advantage: No repaints when dragging/cursor movement, etc. Disadvantage: needs to rescue window content The paint is as before, the added step is the saving, the copying from Window to OverlayBuffer (uses OutputDevice::DrawOutDev()). This step seems to be the bottleneck then with the used combination. For information: The change was planned for both steps, the Overlay and the output buffering together. The 2nd step, the output buffering, enchances the above mechanism in also preparing the paint not on the Window, but on a VDev, too. Of course the copying for Overlay buffer is then locally from VDev to VDev and the Window paint is just a DrawOutDev. This feature cannot be used for SC/SW as long as the paint is controlled from the applications directly instead of completely using the DrawingLayer. This buffering is only possible when the DrawingLayer knows all about the repaint. ATM the paint is: - The hell is painted using DL. - The app does with the window what it wants. This is the part which would need to be redirected to a VDev under DrawingLayer control, now hard coded in the apps to paint to their Window. - The heaven is painted using DL. - Overlay is handled using DL. AW-ER: Switching off is a possible workaround for 2.2 for this driver combination. Who would have to do that? AW-THB: Can the DrawOutDev implementation (or whatever it is using) copying from Window to VDev be improved in the used combination of systems/ressources? - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Who would have to do that? The routine setting up the user installation during first run would have to detect that. Don't know if that's feasible, I guess otherwise it's up to the user :-( - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I am wondering why the autotests which were run on aw024 did not show that results, that's why we are doing them. AW: Especially when scripts are running or something automatically is done, it shows that tre repaint is slower than before. In SC, it's the table merging which seems to cause big repaints durin the merge itself. What is clear with aw024: - Complete repaints are slower when the Overlay is switched on, the window content needs to be fetched - Handling Overlay OTOH is much faster and without flickering with Overlay and will allow more UI stuff with selections/interactions - In SC and SW Overlay is on by default, output buffering is off (see above for reasons) - In comparison to SC, SW seems to not cause problems since it does not repaint everything, but tries to repaint only small parts. - All apps should not repaint while doing script/batch work. - Overlay and OutputBuffering may be switched on/off globally (for all apps) with the above listed configuration flags So maybe we will need to switch off Overlay for SC by default. This is easy to accomplish and not dangerous, but would lead to heavy flickering (one of the goals why Overlay was done). Let's see tomorrow what is necessary. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
