2010-03-18 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi everyone,

As many of you might have noticed by now, we have added a new
Resourceshttp://developer.android.com/resources/index.htmltab under
developer.android.com. It contains samples, tutorials and technical
articles. We want your feedback to add more samples and tutorials to
it.. Please add/vote topics for new samples and tutorials at the link
herehttp://bit.ly/cenfnx.
Please be very specific (like mentioning API or package or feature or tool
names) when you submit a suggestion.

Thanks for your feedback in helping us improve our Android developer
resources.

 Hey guys I just got Android up and running and I followed the tutorial
 on the Android tutorial page, but I can't get it running. Here is the
 code:

 package HelloAndroid.der;

 import android.app.Activity;
 import android.os.Bundle;
 import android.widget.TextView;

 public class HelloAndroid extends Activity {
   /** Called when the activity is first created. */
   @Override
   public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
   super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
   TextView tv = new TextView(this);
   tv.setText(Hello, Android);
   setContentView(tv);
   }
 }

 When it is run only 'Android' pops up on the phone screen.

 I have a feeling it has something to do with the way I have named it.
 I am completely new to programming, but really want to learn and
 become a competent coder.

 Any help is appreciated, thanks

[android-beginners] Re: SDK Installation Error Code 0x80004005

2008-10-03 Thread Megha Joshi
This still looks like a unzipping issue...you might want to try and download
sdk again, or search for other unzip utils for your OS.

2008/10/4 Beryl McLachlan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  Hi Megha Joshi,

Thanks – it was zipped with WinRAR which I
 didn't pick up on. The first time I extracted the files I had lots of CRC
 errors so I downloaded the SDK again from Google's site. Now I still have
 three CRC errors as follows:

 [

 !   C:\Users\Rob\Downloads\Android SDK\android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1.zip: CRC
 failed in
 android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1\docs\reference\java\util\LinkedHashMap.html. The
 file is corrupt

 !   C:\Users\Rob\Downloads\Android SDK\android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1.zip: CRC
 failed in
 android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1\docs\reference\org\xml\sax\helpers\DefaultHandler.html.
 The file is corrupt

 !   C:\Users\Rob\Downloads\Android SDK\android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1.zip: CRC
 failed in android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1\tools\lib\images\system.img. The file
 is corrupt

 ]

   I wonder if I should download the SDK again? Are the above files
 important.

 Thanks for your help.

 It seems like its a problem with the unzip utility on your OS. You need to
 install WinRAR. From a quick search on your error code I found this
 resolution that might help:

[android-beginners] Re: :Help needed

2008-09-16 Thread Megha Joshi
It is not recommended to send the Cursor object between Activities. Your
sub-Activity, might not be int he same app, and so the Cursor would not be
relevant.
The recommended way to do this is to pass a content URI to the sub Activity
and let the sub-Activity do the query by itself.

If you know for sure that both Activities are in the same process you could
use a global Cursor variable, but it is a very fragile approach.

 Hi

   hey... how can i send a Cursor Object to my sub-Activity...
if possible give me some sample code...

   Thanks in Advance for any Replays!!!

You can use MapView APIs for android:
http://code.google.com/android/reference/com/google/android/maps/MapView.html

Check out MapView sample code at ApiDemps/Views/MapViewDemo.
Unfortunately, the directions API is not included for 1.0 release.

 Anyone has some sample code which i can look at for me to start off
 interfacing with Maps. In my app i will need to get from place A to B
 showing me with the use of an arrow the direction i should take. (i.e
 similar to a GPS system). I am very new to android :(.
 Thanks to all that can help me.

You can use AlertDialog:
See sample code below:

If you don't want dialogs with buttons you can use Toast.makeText() instead.

 This method is availabale in M5 but has been dropped in Android 0.9 --

 showAlert(CharSequence,int,CharSequence,CharSequence,boolean)

 I like to know the new equivalent in Android 0.9

[android-beginners] Re: Intercepting Calls

2008-09-09 Thread Megha Joshi
In the previous post I mentioned PhoneStateIntentReceiver...which has been
removed in the latest sdk. Sorry for the confusion. It has now been replaced
by PhoneStateListener():
http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/telephony/PhoneStateListener.html
You can use this along with TelephonyManager to get notified of call state
changes...like when the call comes in:
http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/telephony/TelephonyManager.html

2008/9/9 Bill P. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 I am actually interested in doing something when a call comes in, so if
 there is a way, that would be great.

 (i am just getting into this.)

 thanks.

For security reasons, you cannot intercept the incoming call in any way,

Did you launch emulator with -wipe-data? Can you provide the logcat output?
You are also missing the uses-library tag for maps Api in your

2008/9/4 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi all,

 I'm porting an app which runs well under m5 to 0.9 using Eclipse with
 ADT on Mac OSX 10.5.4
 I appear to have made all necessary changes to get the app to compile
 and link: Eclipse doesn't complain.
 The bad behavior symptom is that the app basically fails to start.
 It simply hangs up before getting the Activity started in the
 debugger, displaying ActivityThread.class in Eclipse.
 Here's the DDL trace (sans datetime):

  Android Launch!
  adb is running normally.
  Launching: com.herenow.android.quester.Quester
  Automatic Target Mode: launching new emulator.
  Launching a new emulator.

  Warning once: This application, or a library it uses, is using
 NSQuickDrawView, which has been deprecated. Apps should cease use of
 QuickDraw and move to Quartz.
  HOME is up on device 'emulator-5554'
  Uploading Quester.apk onto device 'emulator-5554'
  Installing Quester.apk...
  Success!
  Starting activity com.herenow.android.quester.Quester on device
  ActivityManager: Starting: Intent { comp={com.herenow.android.quester/
 com.herenow.android.quester.Quester} }

 The file /Users/ken/.android/emulator.cfg mentioned above does not
 exist.
 If I attempt to restart the app by clicking the Eclipse debug icon, I
 get the following:

  Android Launch!
  adb is running normally.
  Launching: com.herenow.android.quester.Quester
  Automatic Target Mode: using existing emulator: emulator-5554

 ...Nothing more.

 Here's my AndroidManifest.xml:

 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?

package=com.herenow.android.quester
application android:icon=@drawable/icon

 permission^M
uses-permission
 android:name=android.permission.ACCESS_CELL_ID/uses-permission

 /manifest

 The file Quester.java contains the onCreate menthod beginning as
 follows:

@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle icicle)
{
super.onCreate(icicle);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
_mapView = new MapView(this, GOOGLE_MAP_API_KEY);
 blah..blah...

 There is a debug breakpoint set on super.onCreate(icicle);

 I will //GREATLY// appreciate pointers/suggestions for getting this
 running.
 Thanks in advance,

 Ok, that makes a /major/ difference:
 The app actually gets started, and a centerpoint for the map appears.
 However, no map actually is shown. A diagonal crosshatch is there,
 but nothing else.

 The app has some key responses dispatched by onKeyDown and these
 appear to basically be working correctly.

 So I need to be able to figure out what's happened to maps (between m5

 Thanks much.

[android-beginners] Re: problem wid the sdcard

2008-08-28 Thread Megha Joshi
2008/8/28 Amin [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 I have added some text files in my sdcard image using adb push .

 What I am trying to do is making a file browser for sdcard. and I can
 see all the folders and files i created in my sdcard img through my
 application. Now what i want is, I want to view that text files in my
 application. Can you please tell me how can I do this? I already
 tried this

 Intent myIntent = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW,

  Uri.parse(file://home/sdcard.img/test.txt));

change your path to file:///sdcard/test.txt ...Android filesystem is
different from your machine's filesystem so file://home/sdcard.img/test.txt.
wont work.
You can browse the android filesystem from DDMS file explorer...

 But does not work.

 Thanks

[android-beginners] Re: Android SMS

2008-08-26 Thread Megha Joshi
2008/8/26 Sylvester Steele [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 Hi,
 this might seem silly, but I can't get the SMS app to work. Issues:

 1. Can't type in the To field. Worked around by selecting a contact
 from the addressbook.
 2. Can't type a message! How do I select the Open keyboard to compose
 message and actually type in?

For both issues, the answer is you need to press KEYPAD_7, F11, KEYPAD_9 or
F12 key to simulate opening the keyboard before you can type anything ...

 Thanks,
 Sylvester

And if you downloaded the plugin recently, you will need the latest 0.9 SDK,

[android-beginners] Re: I failed to install ADT-0.3.3 !

2008-05-30 Thread Megha Joshi
 Hi,

 This happens because you did not uninstall the last plugin, but just
disabled it. What you can do is go to Help--Software Updates--Manage
Configuration.
 Click on the third icon on top( the tooltip for it should say Show
Disabled Features). Find you last ADT plugin and uninstall it.
 Then follow the steps you did earlier again. That should work.

[android-beginners] Re: how to create a widget dynamically after setContenView

2008-05-08 Thread Megha Joshi
You can always create layouts programatically, and it is also possible to
add widgets programatically to the layouts declared in xml files.
All widgets provide constructors which you can use to create them
programatically..There are methods corresponding to each xml attribute for
any widget, so you can set properties programatically. Check out the
documentation on widgets for those.

For example, you can add a TextView to your xml declared layout as follows:

LinearLayout l = (LinearLayout)findViewById(R.id.widget27);
TextView label = new TextView(this);
label.setText(test);
l.addView(label, new LinearLayout.LayoutParams(
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.FILL_PARENT,
LinearLayout.LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT));

Hope that helps.

 Ok I want to be able to create a widget dynamically after a

@Override

super.onCreate(icicle);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
}
 }

 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
 LinearLayout
 android:id=@+id/widget27
 android:layout_width=fill_parent
 android:layout_height=fill_parent
 xmlns:android=http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
 android:orientation=vertical

 Button
 android:id=@+id/widget28
 android:layout_width=wrap_content
 android:layout_height=wrap_content
 android:text=Hit me!

 /Button
 /LinearLayout

 Now after the line:
 setContentView(R.layout.main);

 can I add another button to the LinearLayout? How do I do this? This
 is an oversimplification of what I want to do, hence the question
 might sound silly.

 If this is not possible, how can I create the above UI represented by
 the XML file programmatically?

Also, you would use broadcastIntent() if you want an IntentReceiver in the
other application to receive the data, but if you want an Activity in the
other application to receive that data you can use startActivity()(with
NEW_TASK_LAUNCH flag) instead. In both cases you will make an Intent object
and put data in its Extras bundle.

 Hi Everyone,

 I'm trying to write a little app that passes information from one
 program running on the android framework to another. I figure the way
 to do this is to make an intent and bundle up the data I want into the
 Intent and broadcast it out with this:

 http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/content/Context.html#broadcastIntent(android.content.Intent)http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/content/Context.html#broadcastIntent%28android.content.Intent%29

 But I can't figure out how to make a context so I can't call this
 method! Any help would be appreciated.

[android-beginners] Re: Concurrent DB Access

2008-04-07 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi Michael,

The 'could not open field slot' error might be due to a single query
returning more than 1MB of data, this is a known issue and has been fixed.
The fix will be released with the next release of the SDK.

SQLiteDatabase does full database level locking, so there shouldn't be any
problems with concurrent access going on. The background service queries
should be run on a seperate thread to avoid blocking the UI. The
AsyncQueryHandler class can be used for constructing non-blocking queries
without writing the threading code yourself.

Thanks,
Megha

 Hi,

 exception, which I cannot really reproduce. I thus thought it might be
 due to this concurrent DB access... Is this possible? If so, how could
 I avoid such problems? Or should I try to search the problem somewhere
 else?

 Thanks,

[android-beginners] Re: how to show alerts

2008-04-01 Thread Megha Joshi
Hi,

You can dismiss the dialog shown by showalert() by clicking the back button
on the emulator, if your dialog is cancelable.
http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/content/Context.html#showAlert(java.lang.CharSequence,%20int,%20java.lang.CharSequence,%20java.lang.CharSequence,%20android.content.DialogInterface.OnClickListener,%20java.lang.CharSequence,%20android.content.DialogInterface.OnClickListener,%20boolean,%20android.content.DialogInterface.OnCancelListener)

If you want a show an alert which disappears automatically after a specified
duration or disappears on calling cancel(), consider using the Toast class
instead.

Sample code for using Toast:
The ApiDemos  apps AlarmService.java,AlarmController.java

Hope this helps!

Thanks,
Megha

You can start by going through the Getting Started section at:
http://code.google.com/android/documentation.html

I recommend you should also do the NotePad tutorials. Then go through the
rest of the android documentation.

If you have doubts/questions, search the documentation, go through the FAQ,
search the groups, you might find an answer :)
If not, post your questions to the groups.
