Re: [arr] Sangamam IS IT....

2005-03-28 Thread stylegamer

Sb was advanced for its timeIf u look closely, it may resemble
some of ARR like trademarks like the orchestration, mood setting ect..
I think ARR was probaby inspired by IR's work.but sorry to say
Sangamam could not top SB since its not really int he same league but
close...ARR needs to do something pure and carnatic like SB to prove
it

Hai,

You are correct Prashanth.

IR, ARR both are from different generations.  I hope IR is in his last stage but ARR still is in fire.  Nobody can object that ARR create a new style of music.  Here there is no need to argue for who is best.  It is fact that IR cannot give hit like 'SB' in future.

the

Re: [arr] What does Rahman's music mean to you?

2005-03-28 Thread Vasumathi S

hi buddies,
it was really overwhelming to read what u
have written Dasun.I agree with what u say and have
similar notions.Something touches u very deep when u
hear our Boss.It is said that when u are depressed or
upset about something,u should never listen to slow
sad songs but listen to peppy songs to pep u up, but i
have tried to listen to slow numbers of ARR when i
feel low and it soothes me a lot.i feel very calm and
nice after listening to ARR as though he himself is
telling me not to worry and everything will be
fine. His music has tremendous amount of Empathy in
it.Theres a lot of human element in it.he actually
talks through it,probably thats why he is so quiet in
his interviews, because he lets his music talk to us!!
Well may God bless him with everything he may ever
need.
We love u ARR

Sangamam is very good .. but Sindhu Bhairavi (SB) is in a different

Of all the songs that I listened to after SB .. only one can compete

[arr] Sangamam IS IT....

2005-03-28 Thread Shiva Kumar

I c sumbudy refering Sindhu Bhairavi... that was a
classic...

How about Sangamam?

It is the only movie in which ARR has not used any
electronic instruments... just pure music... a new
face of carnatic music... Shankar Mahadevan's Varaha
Nadikarai is an evergreen song...

and then there is one song Margali thingal... which
has Janaki madam's melodious voice (who says no one
can match Lata Mangeshkar)...

Hariharan's Mazhi thuli sangamam song in the end can
bring tears... not only the music but the lyrics was
also so touching in that song (hats off to
vairamuthu)...

i dunno if there is any kind of music which ARR has
not explored... i've listened the LOTR BGM which was
posted in this site a few days back... it is great...

wotsay guys...?

Re: [arr] What does Rahman's music mean to you?

2005-03-28 Thread Dasun Abeysekera

Hi Guys,

I perfectly understand what you are saying. If I have followed two musicians
with all my heart and complete faith since I first heard their music around
1994, they are ARR and Yanni (I hope you don't mind me involving Yanni in
this discussion). And these two are more than musicians to me. They have
shaped my life and my way of thinking over the past decade and not just
their music, but their personalties and philosphies are a huge part of who I
am now. To me they represent the very best of mankind as they have proven
that you can achieve the highest pinnacles of human achievement if you work
with total dedication to what you belieeve in, and yet still remain
selfless, humble, and committed to the betterment of not one's self, but of
mankind. I find it very fascinating that I have subconsciously chosen two
great men from the two countries that gave birth to western civilization
(Yanni is from Greece, for those of you who don't know) and eastern
civilization; that means I have the best of both worlds. :)

One comment Yanni made to an audience at the Interlochen Center for the Arts
(school for budding young musicians and other artists) summed up why these
two are in a league of their own. I will briefly summeriza the essence of
what he said. "You should never write music thinking I'm sad now, so I am
going to write sad music, or I'm happy now, so I'm going to write happy
music," he said, "you should wait until you've overcome the emotion you are
going through and write about the learning proceess that took place while
you went through the emotion." That is the essence of the triumph of the
human spirit. Have you ever felt depressed after listening to ARR's or
Yanni's songs (for his fans in this group)? I have never felt that way. Even
the melancholic songs expresses love, and never hatred or anger. He said
that although rap (as we know it in America, for example) is a way of
expressing one's anger and that iss fine, but I don't think the world needs
that kind of music." That is the beauty of their music, you almost always
feel good listening and it makes you visualize the most beautiful things,
works out your imagination and takes you places. Isn't that what we all
should expect from any kind of music?

Hail ARR!

Regards,
Dasun

One cannot forget the work of ARR in "Duet"... what a
class he showed... and one more thing just threading a
classical raaga to a tune was not a big task for
IR.But ARR has gone beyond barriers by raga fusions,
and taking Indian classical music to western mixes...
A composer from one era cannot be compared with
another.. both have done their best in their own
jurisdiction...

i hope i've made a point.. pls tell me if iam wrong...

that Rahman's music is a very authentic and powerful extension of himself as a person.  Of course, all art is an extension of the artist by definition, but I really feel that Rahman imposes very little artificial boundaries by choice and more often than not.  His music ecompasses a wide range of styles, modes, moods, colors, etc. etc. on the surface.  On an intellectual left brain mode, I love his compositional, acoustic and arrangement brilliance.  There is no doubt he excells there.  Yet, on a right brain, emotional level, I really feel that is where he excells most powerfully.  His ability to communicate such deep and unsaid emotions, so true to form and to authentic, that they defy explanation or mere verbal commentary.  Like other great artists in the past, Rahman's music often has the effect of making time stand still and involving me in a deeper level of conscious, almost like a
meditation.  Again, let's skip the surface level analysis.  If there were words to describe the feelings I receive from Rahman and his music, it would be hope, continuity, stability, connectedness, and transcendentalness.  Mere approximations only, but I really feel connected to Rahman's music on a very spiritual and deeply conscious level.  Not just entertainment, not merely moving, not only inpsiring, it's the emotional/spiritual matrix of his music that draws me to him.  Again, I cannot fully explain in words.Once again, I don't mean to sound too dramatic or overly emotional or passionate.  But, these are the qualities of Rahman and his music that appeal to me, especially in our lives when pain and suffering challenge us constantly.    Explore, Experience, Enjoy A.R.Rahman - The Man, The Music, The Magic.Only at arrahmanfans -

[arr] How many albums so far...

2005-03-28 Thread up84mouli

Hi All,

Just simple questions. Donno if it has already come up.

1. How many Tamil Albums has ARR scored so far?
2. How many Hindi Albums?

Exclude "complete dubs" and also the multi-composed albums.

Thanks for reading.
Chandra.

[arr] Why Rahman gave music to Bose

2005-03-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Why Rahman gave music to Bose

Arthur J Pais | March 28, 2005 13:38 IST

A R RahmanWhen A R Rahman was offered Bose: The Forgotten Hero, the composer
did not hesitate
to take it up.

Wasn't he concerned he had composed music for too many period films in recent
years --
including Lagaan and The Legend Of Bhagat Singh -- and also agreed to work on
the Aamir Khan
starrer The Rising? "What was important to me was that these films are made for
posterity," the
39-year-old music director told rediff.com in New York. "These films are made
by serious
filmmakers who are taking big risks. I find it very stimulating to work with
such talents."

Rahman's tunes bring Bose back

"There are times I take up a project even when many people in the business feel
that the film
may not become a hit," he said, adding he does not regret having worked in
films like M F
Husain's Meenaxi and Shyam Benegal's Zubeidaa.

More on rediff.com!

Best Of The Week

My Brother... Nikhil is touching

Review: Tango Charlie

Review: Zeher

"Those films have very good reputations and people have appreciated their
music. It is
important to remember that money is not everything, even in this business."

Even as he got busier with the British musical version The Lord Of The Rings,
he still made
time for films that he thought were challenging. The musical in which he works
along with a
Finnish folk group opens in Toronto in March 2006 and a few months later in
London. A Broadway
version is also under discussion. Each edition reportedly cost $20 million,
making them the
most expensive shows to open in London or Toronto.

Another important reason he took up Bose was because he was going to work with
Shyam Benegal
again, more than three years after Zubeidaa.

Rahman considers his music for Zubeidaa among his strongest and he attributes
some of its
success to Benegal's vision.

"On my way to New York, a gentleman recognised me and started chatting about my
music," Rahman
recalled. "He wanted to tell me his favourite numbers. He surprised me when he
mentioned
Zubeidaa. I thought he was going to mention Taal or Lagaan."

Benegal had let him be on his own, Rahman said with a smile. Benegal had
perhaps thought the
composer worked best when he was alone. "But I really wanted him to sit with me
and feel how
the music was working out," Rahman said, smiling. "Once we had that
understanding, everything
worked out fine."

For Bose, songs that had fuelled the Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National
Army had to be
presented in such a way, Rahman said, that the integrity of the originals were
preserved.

The movie also gave him a unique opportunity to compose several instrumental
numbers. He did
have a small regret: He wanted Lata Mangeshkar to sing a number but she was not
available.
"However, we found a newer singer, Swapna Mukherjee, and she worked out very
well for the
film."

Rahman has also used voices most movie fans may not be very familiar with --
Vijay Prakash,
Nachiketa Chakraborty and Satyanarayana Mishra.

Many filmmakers in Bollywood like Subhash Ghai, Rajkumar Santoshi, Govind
Nihalani and Benegal
have appreciated his soft melodies. "But in Chennai, producers want fast and
louder music,"
Rahman said. "Sometimes, it is difficult to convince them that soft music has
its merits."

"I love composing the kind of songs I grew up listening in my younger days. In
the Hindi
movies, I admired the songs of Madan Mohan, S D Burman and Naushad in
particular."

His respect for Naushad's work in Mughal E Azam is so intense, Rahman said,
that when feelers
were sent to him if he would compose a theme song for the film, he rejected the
suggestion
outright.

When told that Naushad, while criticising the current state of music, had also
found fault with
him, Rahman smiled. The senior composers are like elderly family members, he
said. You hug
them, you touch their feet, and they will welcome you in no time. They are like
children, he
added.

He had made several attempts to meet with Naushad late last year, but something
or the other
cropped up. Missed opportunities, Rahman said with a sigh, often fuel
misconceptions and
misunderstandings.
